Richardson in Fourth Place After Day One SACRAMENTO, CA-- Long Beach State junior Chris Richardson (Downey) is just 54 points out of second place and on pace for All-America honors after ranking fourth in the decathlon after day one at the NCAA Championships. Richardson's point total of 3919 is a bit behind his school-record 4052 pace in mid-April, following a second place finish in the long jump (866 points) and seventh place finishes in the 100-meter (789)and high jump competitions (758). He finished off the day with 794 points in the 400-meter with a season-best time of 50.45. Richardson trails Texas' Trey Hardee (4311) and is right on the heals of Arizona's Jake Arnold (3973) and Joe Detmer (3929). The rest of the top-eight (the cutoff for All-American) are within 100 points. The final five events begin Thursday at 10 a.m. Kim Heinz, competing in her first national javelin championship, could not advance to the finals, finishing 21st with a throw of 146'0". John Temidara also did not advance, reaching a season-best 7'0.25", but not being able to touch the leading height of 7'1.25" on three attempts, finishing tied for 14th, missing the finals by one spot. Emily Forsythe no heighted in the high jump. Richardson is the only 49er ever to top the previous school-record of 7148, doing it twice, including his record of 7605 at the California Decathlon Championships.
