Long Beach State Journal: Women's Volleyball in Europe Slovenian/Austria Our first day in Slovenia, we arrived in the afternoon in Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, and we were blown away by the beautiful countryside and lovely hotel. Our first adventure was up the chair lift right behind our hotel, where we had lunch halfway up the mountain. We found out that people travel from all over the world to this hotel to enjoy the many relaxing services it offers. We ate lunch at the hotel and had time to rest before we met our toughest opponents that evening, the Slovenian National Team. After the match we ate dinner with the national team where we found out that some of the players were staying in our hotel as well. The next morning, Alexis, Robin, Dyanne, and Naomi, were invited to practice with the National team because they were short a few players as a result of injuries. The players thought it was a honor to be asked and enjoyed experiencing the different style of play. We stopped in Salzburg that afternoon to enjoy a few hours in the city. The city is famous as being the birthplace of Mozart and also where scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed. Though the weather was unfavorable, the streets were still bustling with vendors and people allowing us to gain an understanding of what the town is like. Along with the fun shopping, we also saw the Hohensalzburg castle that was impossible to miss, as it was located on top of the hill overlooking the city, and also the Cathedral, Dom. After seeing this city, our next stop was Innsbruck where we stayed at an Inn right outside the city. Innsbruck is nestled between the Alps, which provided for a beautiful landscape. That night was we had an Austrian dinner at the hotel. The next morning we got the opportunity where previous winter Olympics had taken place, Innsbruck. Though it was a Sunday and our experience was limited to what was open for us to observe, we did get to see the Goldenes Dachl (the little golden roof) and explore the Old Town. Then we got on the bus for our long breath-taking drive through the Alps to our final destination, Zurich. Each game was close and intense, as we failed to win by two points each time. Overall, we grew together as a team with each game we played and we realized that our experiences here against not only the Slovenian National team, but also all of our previous opponents, were priceless and extremely beneficial.
