Longoria, Espinosa Earn Top Honors IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State's Evan Longoria (Downey) was named the co-Big West Player of the Year and Danny Espinosa (Santa Ana) was named the conference's Freshman Player of the Year to highlight the Dirtbags on the All-Big West team. Longoria joined right handed starter Andrew Carpenter (Vacaville) on the first team. Making the second team were outfielder Robert Perry (Sunnyvale) and freshman designated hitter Shane Peterson (Temecula). Jared Hughes (Laguna Beach) and Espinosa rounded out the honorable mention selections. This is the fourth conference player of the year from Long Beach State, and first since first round pick Bobby Crosby in 2001. Longoria shared the award with CS Fullerton's Justin Turner. Longoria finished the year batting .353 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs, leading the league in slugging (.602) and on-base percentage (.468), while ranking in the top-10 in five other offensive categories .Longoria moved up from the second team last season to earn his first, first team accolade. Longoria, a likely first round pick, batted .336 in his two-year career with 16 home runs and 73 RBIs. Espinosa earned the year's rookie of the year with UC Irvine hurler Scott Gorgen, who was named the freshman pitcher of the year. Espinosa ranked fourth in the conference with 16 doubles and batted .281 overall. He also led the league in assists with 186. Carpenter led the team with a 2.91 ERA and 7-4 record in 16 starts, while Perry batted .309 with 43 runs and 33 RBIs. Peterson batted .328, second on the team, with 19 RBIs and a .432 slugging percentage. Hughes had a team-best eight wins (8-4) and produced a 3.67 ERA. He was a second team selection last year. CS Fullerton's Wes Roemer was named the Pitcher of the Year, while George Horton, also from the Titans, was named the Coach of the Year. |
