Weaver Called up to the Majors

Halo Effect: Weaver Called up to Majors LONG BEACH, CA-- Former National Player of the Year Jered Weaver will become the 27th former Long Beach State player to play in the Majors after being called up by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Friday. This season, his second in the minors, Weaver was 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Salt Lake, striking out 66 and walking just eight. Weaver was coming off a complete game shutout of New Orleans on May 23, which ran his scoreless innings streak to 27 and two-thirds innings, which tied the club record. The younger brother of Angels starter, Jeff, is slated to start Saturday at the Big A in Anaheim at 7 p.m. against the Orioles. Weaver was 7-4 with a 3.91 ERA in stints at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Arkansas last season. The 12th overall pick of the Angels in 2004, Weaver shattered most of Long Beach State's pitching records in his three seasons, going 37-9 with a 2.43 ERA and 431 strikeouts. He was the unanimous choice for national Player of the Year in 2004 after going 15-1 with a 1.62 ERA. He was also a two-time first team All-American and a two-time Big West Pitcher of the Year. He joins former teammates Abe Alvarez (Red Sox), Chris Demaria (Brewers) and Paul McAnulty (Padres) who have all been called up to the Majors this season, joining the eight which began the season on Major League rosters. The previous three players all played in the Majors last season. |
