49ers Headed to NCAA Regionals LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field will send 17 athletes to the NCAA Regional in Provo, UT to compete in 15 events starting on Friday at 11 a.m. The regional meet continues on Saturday with the top-five competitors in each event qualifying automatically for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento in early June. The 49ers feature six marks that rank in the top-10 in the West Region, led by John Temidara, who looks to return to his fourth-straight NCAA Championship and second-straight outdoor championship. Temidara ranks fourth in the West in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump. He has competed in three-straight NCAA Championship high jumps. Big West Athlete of the Year Chris Richardson, who has already qualified for the NCAA Championship in the decathlon, ranks fourth in the West in the long jump. Ronald Carter looks to return to his second-straight NCAA Championship triple jump, ranking sixth in the West. Charles Lewis has the sixth-best 400-meter time on the left coast, while Kim Heinz rounds out the 49ers in the top-10 with the ninth-best javelin throw on the West Coast. The 49ers will be well represented in the discus and javelin, where they send four athletes in each event. Ed Cornell, Robert Jennings and David Sampson are the male discus throwers, while Katelyn Ciarelli will throw for the women. In the javelin, Big West Champions Tyler McCoy and Heinz are joined by Richardson on the men's side and freshman Alex Shaw on the women's. Sampson will also compete in the shot put, while Jennings will compete in the hammer and discus as one of six athletes competing in two events. |
