Longoria Makes History with Honor IRVINE, CA-- Not Jason Giambi, or Bobby Crosby or even Troy Tulowitzki can say this. Long Beach State third baseman Evan Longoria (Downey) became the first Long Beach State position player to be named a Big West Player of the Week three times in a career, let along a season, after earning the honor for the third time this season. Longoria batted.583 last week with six runs, two doubles and a home run in leading The Beach (23-18-1) to four wins and a season-best seven-game winning streak. Longoria enters Tuesday's hosted game with Pepperdine, batting .354 with nine homers and 35 RBIs. Longoria, a projected top-10 pick in the 2006 draft, earned previous honors on February 20 and April 3 and joined teammate Andrew Carpenter, a three-time conference pitcher of the week this season, as three-time winners. Just three LBSU players have more career weekly honors than Longoria, 2004 National Player of the Year Jered Weaver (12 honors), San Diego Padres prospect Cesar Ramos (4) and 1996 Big West Pitcher of the Year Marcus Jones (4). |
