49ers Earn NCAA Invitation
First Team Appearance In School History

LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State women's golf team made history on Monday as they were selected to compete at the 2006 NCAA West Regionals on May 11-13 at the Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, WA. This is the first time a 49er women's team has advanced to the NCAA Championships. Last year Kay Hoey was the first 49er individual to be invited to the competition.

"This is very exciting news for our program," said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. "Kay Hoey started the ball rolling last year when she qualified as an individual for Regionals and then went on and finished top 30 at Nationals. I think the team really rallied around her performance and stepped up to the plate. My congratulations to the team for all their hard work last fall and this spring. I know the news will give them some much needed momentum and hopefully carry us on into Nationals. I couldn't be more proud of the individual effort from each member of this team. They have set the standard for all that will follow."

The 49ers finished in second place at the 2006 Big West Conference Championships last week behind UC Irvine, but earned one of the 31 at-large bids which were handed out. Long Beach had its best season in school history recording six top five finishes in its nine tournaments this season. The 49ers recorded second place finishes at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational (Feb. 27-28/Score of 580) and the Big West Championships (Apr. 24-25/Score of 929). The Beach also finished third at the Kent Youel Invitational (Nov. 1-2/Score of 907) in Hawaii and fourth place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic (Sept. 12-13/ Score of 887) in Ft. Collins, CO and at the UNLV Spring Invitational (Mar. 13-15/Score of 886).

Long Beach had a record five players earn all-conference recognition as Hoey, Katy Barrett and Hayley Wilkinson all earned first team All-Big West honors. Beth Holtermann was named second team and Kira Murashige was honorable mention.

The top eight teams, and top three individuals, at each of the three regional sites earns a trip to the NCAA Championships which will be held May 23-26 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, OH. Ohio State University is the host school for the NCAA Championships.
