LONG BEACH, CA-- Norm Hutton had a career-high 20 kills and Robert Tarr added 21 kills and 10 digs to lift Long Beach State to a 29-31, 30-28, 30-27, 30-24 over No. 2-ranked Brigham Young on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers, who swept both matches from the Cougars, improve to 19-9 overall and 12-8 in the MPSF while BYU falls to 18-6 and 14-6 in league action.
The 49ers relied on Hutton and Tarr's offense, Tyler Hildebrand's setting and the backrow play of Tyler Caldwell to earn the win. Hutton took a career-high 49 swings and hit .163, but came through time and time again when the 49ers needed a kill. Hutton's previous career-high was 17 kills in a five-game win over IPFW earlier this season. In Thursday's win over the Cougars he came off the bench to finish with 10 kills.
Tarr picked up his fifth double-double of the year and also had five blocks and two service aces. Duncan Budinger added 11 kills and Teddy Liles 10 kills and six blocks. Caldwell led the team with 11 digs on the night and also chipped in four assists. The 11 digs represented the ninth time this season he has hit double figures in digs.
Hildebrand, who became LBSU's career assist leader in Thursday's win over the Cougars, finished with 57 assists, three kills, two aces and four digs.
Victor Batista led BYU with 14 kills and hit .440 while Yosleyder Cala added 12 kills and six blocks. Cala was not a factor in games three and four for the Cougars. After the first two games he had 10 kills and six blocks. In the last two games, he totaled just two kills and no blocks. Rodrigo Gomes, Ivan Perez and Russell Holmes all had eight kills. BYU hit .243 on the evening and out-blocked the 49ers 16.0 to 9.5.
Cala tallied six kills in game one as BYU hit .346 and won 31-29. With the game tied 29-29, the 49ers committed two hitting errors to give the Cougars the win. The 49ers jumped to a 12-7 lead in game two, but BYU fought back to tie the contest 27-27. Long Beach eventually won the game 30-28 to tie the match. Game three the 49ers hit .263 and Hutton had eight of his 20 kills as Long Beach won 30-27. Game four was all LBSU. The 49ers led 14-6 before a Cougar rally pulled BYU to within 23-20. After a 49er timeout, Long Beach reeled off three straight points and closed out the match winning 30-24.
The 49ers helped their cause by registering 10 service aces. Frrancisco Valdez, Tarr, Budinger, Hutton and Hildebrand all had two aces apiece. BYU had five aces and 13 service errors.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, April 14 when they host Pacific at 7:30 pm in the Walter Pyramid. |
