Longoria Named Big West's Best Following Sweep IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State third baseman Evan Longoria (Downey) was named the Big West's Player of the Week for the second time this season following the Dirtbags three-game sweep of UC Irvine. The junior batted .455 last week, with five runs and five RBIs, launching a two-run home run in each of the first two games, before a sacrifice fly and a hit on Sunday led to the team's sweep. Overall, Longoria, who is rated as one of the top position players in the country, is batting .353 (10th in the Big West) with a .627 slugging percentage (second) and a .473 on-base percentage (fifth). His seven home runs this season rank second. Longoria also put on a show defensively on Friday, making the tough play look easy, as the junior is fielding at a .975 clip on the season. The Beach, 15-15 and in first place with a 3-0 mark in the Big West, take the next nine days off before beginning an eight-game road trip at San Diego State on April 11. |
