LONG BEACH, CA-- Norm Hutton had a career-high 26 kills and senior All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand had 43 assists, seven digs and five kills as Long Beach State defeated Brigham Young 30-21, 30-23, 25-30, 30-25 at the Walter Pyramid in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament quarterfinal match. The 49ers improve to 22-9 on the season and will meet regular season champion UC Irvine in the tournament semifinals on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 pm in the Bren Events Center. BYU concludes its season at 18-9.

Hutton, who had a previous career-high of 20 kills on April 7 vs. BYU, was impressive all night. He hit .568 (26-5-37) and added four blocks to the cause. Long Beach hit .396 (61-19-06) in the match as Hildebrand controlled the 49er offense. Robert Tarr added 12 kills, Teddy Liles had eight kills and eight blocks and Paul Lotman had seven kills, five digs and four blocks. The 49ers out-blocked the Cougars 15.5 to 10.0 and out-hit them .396 to .184 (50-29-114).

The Cougars were led by Yosleyder's 20 kills. He was th eonly BYU player in double figures. Ivan Perez had nine kills, but hit just .100 (9-7-20). Russell Holmes added seven kills and nine blocks and Victor Batista had six kills.

The 49ers came out strong in front of the Walter Pyramid crowd of 1,441 winning game one 30-21. The 49ers hit .739 (17-0-23) as Hutton tallied five kills and Liles had four kills on four swings and three block assists. BYU hit .194 (13-7-31) in the game. Game two saw the 49ers rebound from a 13-10 deficit to win 30-23. After tying the game at 18-18, the 49ers went on a 4-0 to take control of the game. Tarr had six kills and Hutton five as The Beach went up two games to none.

The Cougars showed plenty of spark in game three winning 30-25. The Cougars hit .290 in the game as Cala tallied seven kills and added two aces. BYU had 6.0 blocks in the game as Holmes recorded five blocks.

Game four was all Long Beach State as they prevailed 30-25. Tied at 6-6, LBSU went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. They they pushed that advantage to 25-15. The 49ers hit .455 (14-4-22) in the game compared to .087 (11-9-23) for the Cougars.

The 49ers advance to the MPSF semifinals for the third consecutive season.
