49ers Headed to UCSD Triton Invite
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field hits the home stretch of its schedule when it travels to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Friday for the hammer throw and Saturday for the rest of the competition. Three weeks remain in the regular season prior to the two-week Big West Championships on May 5 and 12. The 49ers feature eight athletes who own conference leading marks heading into the week, with a handful of event groups, full of black and gold participants. Chris Richardson, who is coming off the 14th-best mark in the world in the decathlon, leads four 49ers in the top-eight in the men's long jump. Richardson also has the best decathlon mark in the conference which is fifth-best in the nation, and the 11th-best long jump, at 25'0.75". He also has a regional qualifying mark in the javelin. Richardson is not the only multi-eventer doing well, as Jaime Cuthbert-Allen has a top-five conference mark in the javelin and the second-best heptathlon total in the Big West. Kim Heinz continues to lead the javelin with a school-record mark of 159'9", as one of four 49ers in the top-five in the Big West. Heinz' mark ranks 20th nationally. Four of the top-five discus throwers are also from Long Beach State, led by Ed Cornell and Robert Jennings, who rank second and third. John Temidara and Ronald Carter rank 1-2 in the triple jump with the 12th and 15th-best jumps nationally, with Temidara ranking 20th in the national high jump. Both athletes look for back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances as one of 14 regional qualifiers. Amongst the distances, Jimmy Grabow has posted the fastest 10,000-meter time, while Meredith Kramon's school-record time in the same event, is second. Danielle Miller continues to be the clubhouse leader in the steeplechase. Ludi Valdez is a regional qualifier in the 5000m. |
