Eric Burkhardt Hired As Strength Coach

LONG BEACH, CA-- Interim Director of Athletics Cindy Masner announced today the hiring of Eric Burkhardt as the new Strength & Conditioning Coach at Long Beach State. Burkhardt brings a wealth of experience to the position and has extensive ties in Southern California. Burkhardt has spent the past year as the Founder and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Citius Fortius Athletics in Lake Forest, CA.

"This is an exciting time for Long Beach State Strength and Conditioning," said Masner. "Eric brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will continue to increase our teams' growth in this important component of competitive excellence. Eric will also have the opportunity to open our new strength complex early this summer."

Burkhardt has served as the founder of Citius Fortius Athletics in which he designs and implements high-performance sport training programs privately and semi-privately and in small group formats. In 2004-05 he served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at UC Santa Barbara overseeing the athletic performance training for all sports. Prior to UCSB he served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at UC Irvine for 11 years (1993-2004).

Burkhardt is returning to his Long Beach State roots. He worked at LBSU from 1986-92 in Strength and Conditioning, serving as an assistant for five years and one year as the Head Coach. He designed and administered on and off-season strength/power training programs for 13 sports, including basketball, football, baseball and volleyball. He also taught and guest lectured in the Department of Physical Education.

Burkhardt graduated from Long Beach in 1986 with a degree in Physical Education. He earned his Masters degree in 1992 from CSULB in Physical Education/Exercise Science.

He has been a member of USA Weightlifting since 1986, has been a guest speaker as numerous Strength and Conditioning conferences, was a nominee in 2002 for the National Strength and Conditioning Association's College Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year and received NSCA Coach Practitioner Distinction in 2003.
