49ers Split Time to Flagstaff and the Emerald City LONG BEACH, CA--The Long Beach State track and field program will send its distance program to Seattle for the Husky Indoor, while the rest of the team will head back to Northern Arizona for a quadrangular with the Lumberjacks, Southern Utah and UC Irvine. "I know this, our sprinters are farther along than at this time last year, and it's based almost solely on strength rather than speed work," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "Our throws program is just at a whole new level, and they are going to be fun to watch down the road. As for our jumps, they have a lot of talent, and hopefully can remain healthy, and already Chris Richardson is showing the amount of talent he has. Our ultimate goal is to prepare for outdoors, but the signs they are showing during indoors is definitely encouraging." For the men, they feature seven athletes ranked in the top-five in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rankings in a broad range of categories. Ronald Carter, following a school-record 51'6.25" in the first meet of the year, leads the MPSF in the triple jump, while Charles Lewis' 400m time (47.31) and Robert Jennings weight throw (58'8.75") both rank second in the conference. Two more athletes rank in the top-five in the shot put, in Ezra Kwong (57'0.25"-3rd) and David Sampson (56'0.25"-5th), who posted those marks in last weekend's meet at NAU. Rounding out the 49ers are Chris Richardson, who has the fourth-best long jump and John Temidara, who has the third-best high jump. This will be the first full indoor meet for the distance program, following a strong showing during the fall at the NCAA Regional and Big West Championships, in which the cross country team posted its best combined finishes in school-history.
