49ers Hold On To Beat Aggies In OT
DAVIS, CA--Aaron Nixon scored a career-high 33 points and Mark Dawson added a career-high 16 points as Long Beach State held on for a 96-92 overtime win at UC Davis on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers improved to 14-11 with the win while the Aggies fell to 8-18. Kejuan Johnson scored seven overtime points and Jibril Hodges added five as they out-scored the Aggies 17-13 in the extra stanza. After UC Davis took its first lead of the game at 86-85 with 2:04 in OT on a three by Vince Oliver, Johnson scored the next seven points to stake the 49ers to the lead. "We got a little lackidasical in our effort," said Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "UC Davis did a heck of a job staying with it and competing all the way through. They could have packed it in at any time. We were fortunate in overtime. Jibril hit a big three to start overtime for us. We played well for 30 minutes, but we just didn't defend the last ten minutes of the game." Long Beach had a chance to win the game in regulation. Tied at 79, Nixon stole a pass with five seconds left and drove to the bucket but was fouled by Marentez with ninth-tenths of a second left on the clock. Nixon missed both free throws sending the contest to overtime. The 49ers shot. 514 (36-70) from the field for the game, but were just 17-31 at the free throw line. Dawson also added eight rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots to his career-high 16 points. Hodges finished with 14 points and Johnson 11. The 33 points by Nixon are the most by a 49er since Byron Russell scored 33 points against UNLV on January 7, 1993. Senior Phil Rasmussen finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Aggies, Kyle Brucculeri had 20 points and 11 boards and Rommel Marentez finished with 18 points. The 49ers jumped on the Aggies early in the first half taking an 11-0 lead at the 15:44 mark. Dawson had eight of the 49ers first 11 points and had 12 points and five rebounds in the first half. Long Beach was able to extend the lead to 26-9 at 11:33 on a Sterling Byrd three and then to 34-13 with 6:53 in the half after a lay-up by Nixon, but the Aggies would make a run. Davis would go on an 11-0 run over the next 2:19 to pull to within 34-24 with 4:35 remaining. Long Beach, behind Nixon's play, would close the half out-scoring UC Davis 13-to-5 to take a 47-32 halftime lead. Nixon scored 10 of the final 15 49er points in the half. The 49ers shot .613 (19-31) from the field in the initial stanza and forced 11 Aggie turnovers. Nixon was a perfect six-of-six from the field in the half and Dawson was five-of-six. The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, March 2 when they close out their home schedule with a 7:05 pm game against UC Riverside at the Walter Pyramid. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
