Dirtbags Sweep up Big West Awards IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State baseball (6-4) swept through the Big West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards on Monday as third baseman Evan Longoria (Downey/St. John Bosco HS) and righthander Andrew Carpenter (West Covina/Vacaville HS) were both honored by the league office. Longoria, who leads the team with a .438 average, has watched his stock rise since the start of the season, with exceptional defense at third and a steady bat, which saw the Dirtbag third baseman bat .538 last week in wins over Lamar and No. 5-ranked Rice. In the Coca Cola Classic alone, in which LBSU won two of three games, Longoria went 7-for-11 and had four of his six walks. This is the pre-season All-American's first conference award, following second team All-Big West honors last year. Longoria, along with former Dirtbag Jeremy Reed were both guests on ESPN's Cold Pizza this morning. Carpenter (1-0), a transfer from Sacramento City College, put forth his best outing of the young season on Saturday, as the Dirtbags defeated No. 5-ranked Rice on its home field, behind seven strong innings of one-run, three-hit baseball. Carpenter struck out a career-best eight and walked two. Carpenter has posted a 1.29 ERA over his last two starts and has a 1.89 ERA on the season, striking out 15 and walking just three as opponents are batting .214 against him. The Dirtbags rose one spot to No. 18 in Baseball America this week and dropped two spots to No. 17 in Collegiate Baseball. |
