49ers Defeat Manhattan, 108-94
RIVERDALE, NY—Long Beach State had seven players score in double figures as they won at Manhattan College on Saturday afternoon 108-94. Shawn Hawkins led the way with a season-high 25 points and Kevin Houston added 17. Arturo Dubois led Manhattan (16-9) with 27 points. With the win the 49ers improve to 13-11. Long Beach shot .515 (35-68) from the field for the game, but blistered the nets in the second half, shooting .593 (16-27). The 49ers also got the job done at the free throw line, hitting 30-of-34 charity tosses (.882), with Hawkins going 10-10 at the line. Jibril Hodges chipped in with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, Louis Darby had 13 points, Kejuan Johnson 16, Aaron Nixon 11 and Mark Dawson 10. Dawson, playing in front of several friends and family members who made the trip across the river from Jersey City, NJ, also added a team-high eight rebounds and three blocks. The 10 points by Dawson ties his previous career-high. "Our guys did a great job of being unselfish today," said 49er Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "Having seven guys in double digits is really good to see. We had situations where we had an advantage and we stuck to it. That was the key to the game. Shawn had a heck of a game for us. I was really happy for him. He came up huge. He had the match-up we liked on the court and we went to it. He was able to put the ball on the floor and go to the basket and he took advantage of that." Long Beach was able to use a 10-1 run to expand an 81-79 lead to 91-80 with 3:57 remaining in the contest. From there the 49ers excelled at the free throw line, hitting 12-of-14 free throws in the final 1:47 of the contest. The 49ers broke open a tight first half with a 14-6 run over the final five minutes of the half to take a 50-43 halftime lead. Long Beach turned up its defensive pressure, causing several turnovers in those final five minutes. Manhattan had 11 first half turnovers and the 49ers recorded seven steals. The Jaspers hit just four-of-13 shots over the last seven minutes of the half. Hawkins, who was able to penetrate the Jasper defense, had 13 first half points while Hodges added 11, including hitting three three-pointers. Long Beach shot .463 (19-41) from the field in the half and hit six-of-13 three's. Dubois was a bright spot for the Jaspers scoring 16 first half points and grabbing eight rebounds. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
