LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (12-11, 7-5 Big West) swept the regular season series with CS Fullerton (11-11, 4-8 Big West), defeating the visiting Titans 88-79 on Wednesday evening. With the win, the 49ers tied the single-game record for three-pointers, set earlier this year (14-of-26) and moved into sole possession of third place in the Big West Conference with two conference games remaining. Jibril Hodges scored a team-best 17 points, hitting five three-pointers in the process, moving into 10th place all-time and passing Bill Florentine (1959-62) early in the first half. Shawn Hawkins added 16 points as the conference's highest scoring offense shot a blistering 53 from the field, and topped 80 points for the 11th time this season. The Titans shot 36 percent from the floor as Justin Burns led the Titans with 21 points. A Hodges fastbreak three-pointer, his fifth of the game, made it 78-56 with 8:25 left, after the Titans closed to within 12 six minutes into the second frame. The Beach opened the half on a 10-2 run, leading 59-38, forcing a Fullerton timeout with 16:56 left. The 49ers built a 49-36 lead at the half, hitting 11 three-pointers. LBSU shot 47 percent, compared to a 39 percent clip by the Titans. Hodges three-pointer with 1:47 left put LBSU up 46-33, extending its lead back to 13 after Hodges' three-pointer with 7:05 left in the first half put the 49ers up 38-26, their largest lead, at that point, of the first half. The 49ers are next in action as part of ESPN's Bracket Buster game, as they travel to the Big Apple to take on Manhattan on Saturday at 10 a.m. PST. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
