49ers Face A Tough Week
THE RECORDS •Beach in 4th place in Big West Conference Long Beach State looks to get back in the win column when they host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday evening. The 49ers are 11-11 overall and 6-5 in the Big West Conference. Last week Long Beach defeated Cal Poly 69-66, but lost to UCSB 81-78. CS Fullerton is 11-10 overall and 4-7 in the Big West. The Titans lost at home last week to Pacific 67-62 and defeated CS Northridge 81-63. Manhattan College, Saturday's opponent, is 15-8 overall and 11-4 in the MAAC. They play at Niagara on Monday night. Last Saturday they fell at Canisius 86-75. THE COACH •Larry Reynolds in his fourth year at LBSU Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 32-74 (.302) in three-plus years as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 142-109 (.566) in his ninth year as a head coach. THE SERIES •49ers lead series with Titans, 53-36 •First meeting with Manhattan The 49ers are 53-36 all-time against Cal State Fullerton, including a 97-96 overtime win at CSUF on January 19. Long Beach has won the last two meetings with the Titans. The 49ers have never play Manhattan in men's basketball. The 49ers are 1-1 all-time against teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Beach is 1-0 vs. Canisius (12/13/73) and 0-1 against Iona (12/1/79). CS FULLERTON FACTS •Titans stand in 5th place in Big West Cal State Fullerton is 11-10 overall and 4-7 in the Big West, good for fifth place. Last week the Titans lost at home to Pacific (67-62) and then defeated CS Northridge, 81-63. In the win over CSUN, Jamaal Brown had 25 points and Jermaine harper 16 as Fullerton shot .561 (32-57) from the field and 8-15 (.533) from three-point range. On the year, Bobby Brown leads the Titans in scoring at 17.6 points per game. Jamaal Brown is next at 17.1 points and leads the team at 8.1 rebounds per outing. They are the only two players in double digits. Frank Robinson and Harper both averaged 9.6 points per game. As a team CSUF is averaging 77.8 points per outing and shooting .452 from the field. Titan opponents are averaging 75.1 points per game. MANHATTAN FACTS •Jaspers stand at 15-8 overall Manhattan College is currently 15-8 overall and 11-4 in the MAAC heading into a game Monday night at Niagara. Last Saturday the Jaspers lost at Canisius, 86-75. In that game Jeff Xavier had 25 points and 12 rebounds as Manhattan shot 13-of-33 from three-point range. On the year Xavier is averaging 15.1 points per game and is shooting .368 (57-155) from three-point range. Arturo Dubois is next at 14.3 points per outings and is the leading rebounder at 8.6 boards per game, while Jason Wingate checks in at 13.2 points per game. Manhattan is averaging 75.7 points per game and allowing 73.2. The Jaspers leading scorer, CJ Anderson, has not played in the last eight games. He was averaging 18.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. BRACKETBUSTERS •49ers head to East Coast Long Beach State will take a break from its Big West Conference schedule next week to travel to the chilly East Coast to take on Manhattan College on Saturday, February 18. The game, which will begin at 10 am Pacific time, was selected from a pool of teams in relationship to the BracketBusters presented by EBay. All eight Big West Conference teams will be taking place in the event on the 18th. This is the first team that Long Beach State has taken part in the Bracket Busters event. Saturday will be the first meeting between Long Beach State and Manhattan in men's basketball. HOMECOMING FOR DAWSON •Jersey City NJ native returns to East Coast Long Beach State junior center Mark Dawson will be heading back home this weekend as the 49ers head to the East Coast. Dawson was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. He prepped at James Ferris High School, averaging 16 points and 14 rebounds per game his senior year. He was named first team All-State and first team All-Jersey City Public School League. After graduation, Dawson came west to attend Pasadena City College. He played two years at PCC, sat out the 2004-05 campaign and then enrolled at Long Beach State. A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND •Last trip to New York state in 1999 The last time Long Beach State played in the state of New York was December 3 & 4, 1999 when the 49ers competed at the Carrier Classic in Syracuse. The 49ers lost to St. Joseph's (79-76) and Richmond (73-62). The 49ers played at Fairleigh Dickinson (Madison, NJ) on December 22, 1993 (W, 108-107, 3OT) and they played at Syracuse (L, 94-79) on December 15, 1990. The last time a Long Beach State men's basketball team played in the New York City vicinity was December 19 & 20, 1972 when Long Beach played Hofstra (93-44) and Jacksonville (97-90) at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. LOOKING FOR WIN NO. 100 •LBSU 99-58 all-time in Walter Pyramid Wednesday the 49ers will be looking for win No. 100 in the Walter Pyramid when they host CS Fullerton. The 49ers are 99-58 (.631) in their 12th season of action in the building. The first win came in the first game on November 30, 1994 as Long Beach defeated Detroit-Mercy 71-64. 49ERS AVERAGING 81.5 PPG •80.1 points per game in Big West play The 49er offense has put up some impressive numbers this season including a 101-point outburst at CS Northridge on February 2. The 49ers are averaging 81.5 points per game this season. In the latest NCAA stats (2/6), the 49ers ranked No. 9 in the nation in scoring. In Big West Conference outings the 49ers are averaging 80.1 points per game. Long Beach has scored 80 or more points 10 times this season and have topped 70 points in 18 of their 22 games. Last Thursday night the 49ers scored just 69 points in the win over Cal Poly, just the fourth time this year the 49ers scored less than 70 points in a game and the first time they have won a game when scoring less than 70 points. Last year the 49ers averaged just 60.7 points per game. LONG-RANGE SHOOTING •8.09 made three's per game •School record 14 made three's at Fullerton The 49ers are shooting .348 (178-511) from three-point range this season, averaging 8.09 made three's per game. In the latest NCAA stats (2/6), the 49ers ranked No. 26 in the country in three-pointers made per game. In the win at CS Fullerton (1/19) the 49ers were 14-34 (.412) from long-range. The 14 made three's breaks the school record and the 34 attempts is the second-most in school history. Earlier this season at Portland the 49ers tied the school record by hitting 13 treys (13-21, .619). The 49ers have hit double digits in made three's in 9 of their 22 games. Long Beach is creeping up on the school-record for made three's which is 200 set in the 1992-93 campaign. Currently, the 49ers have connected on 178 three's this year, a mark which is tied for No. 4 all-time in school history. BALANCED SCORING •Five players in double digits Averaging 81.5 points per game overall, the 49ers have five players who are averaging in double digits. Jibril Hodges (15.0), Aaron Nixon (12.3), Shawn Hawkins (11.6), Kejuan Johnson (11.4) and Kevin Houston (10.1), are all above the magical double digit line this season. FREE THROW SHOOTING •49ers a perfect 13-13 at the charity stripe at CS Fullerton The 49ers have been up and down this year at the free throw line, but recently things have been on the up-swing. They currently stand at .701 (376-536) on the year overall and .730 (176-241) in Big West play. In Saturday's loss to UCSB the 49ers were just 17-26 (.654), the first time in five games they have been below .700 at the line. In the January 19 game at CS Fullerton the 49ers were a perfect 13-13 (1.000). In its last eight games the 49ers are 140-183 (.765) at the charity stripe. The 49ers are averaging 24.4 free throw attempts per game this year. Last year the 49ers went to the line an average of just 17.0 times per game. FORCING TURNOVERS •Opponents averaging 17.0 per outing 49er opponents are averaging more turnovers per game (17.0) this season than the 49ers (15.77). On Thursday night against Cal Poly the 49ers forced 19 turnovers, 15 in the second half, while committing just 12 themselves. Cal Poly had just 11 assists compared to its 19 turnovers. In the last eight games 49er opponents have had more turnovers than assists (144 turnovers to 108 assists). Ten times this season the 49ers have forced their opponents into more turnovers than assists, with nine of those outings coming in the last 13 games. In Big West games opponents are averaging 17.82 turnovers per game. STEALING AWAY •Season-high 14 steals vs. UCI The 49ers had a season-high 14 steals in the game against UC Irvine (1/28), and followed that with 10 thefts at CS Northridge (2/2). That marks the fifth and sixth times this season Long Beach has recorded 10 or more steals in a game. Junior Kejuan Johnson had a career-high six steals against the Anteaters. Long Beach is averaging 7.32 steals per game this year. Kevin Houston leads the way with 30 steals and Johnson is right behind him with 26 while Jibril Hodges has 25. FIRST MEETING WITH CSUF •49ers win exciting OT game Jibril Hodges sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer and Shawn Hawkins won the game with a three-pointer the less than three seconds remaining as Long Beach State won a thrilling 97-96 overtime contest at CS Fullerton on January 19. Hodges finished with 23 points, Hawkins had 18 and Aaron Nixon 16 as the 49ers hit a school-record 14 three-point baskets. Jamaal Brown led the Titans with 31 points and 10 rebounds and Jermaine Harper added 22. Fullerton shot .528 (38-72) from the field, but committed 22 turnovers and were 11-21 (.528) at the free throw line. The 49ers were 14-34 from long-range and were a perfect 13-13 at the charity stripe. WINNING ON THE ROAD •Beach 4-2 on the road in Big West games The 49ers have had their problems on the road in the past, but had won four consecutive road games (Cal Poly, CS Fullerton, UC Riverside, CS Northridge) until falling on February 4 at Pacific. Overall the 49ers are 4-7 away from the Walter Pyramid this season, including a 4-2 mark in Big West games. With just one road game left in league play (March 4 at UCI), the 49ers will post a winning record on the road. The last time that happened was in the 1999-00 season when the 49ers were 8-0 on the road in Big West games. Last year the 49ers were 2-15 on the road (1-13 true road games, 1-2 at neutral sites). HODGES ON CAREER CHARTS •15th 49er to eclipse 1,000 career points (1,150) •Breaks school record for three-pointers made Jibril Hodges keeps moving up the scoring chart for the 49ers. With his 24 points on Saturday against UCSB, Hodges currently stands at No. 11 all-time with 1,150 points. He needs just nine more points to pass Bill Florentine and move into the No. 10 spot. His 1,000th career point came just 24 seconds into the January 13th game against Pacific. He is just the 15th player in school history to surpass that plateau, and he joins his father, Craig, on that short list. The elder Hodges ranks No. 5 all-time with 1,476 points. In the win at UC Riverside (1/21) he broke the school record for career three-pointers, hitting his first of the night and giving him 212 in his career breaking Lucious Harris' mark of 211. Hodges stands alone in first place on the 49er career chart in three-pointers made (229) and three-pointers attempted (611). Hodges has also moved in to the Big West Conference career Top 10 in made three's. His 229 treys tie him for No. 9 all-time in league history. #1-JIBRIL HODGES •24 or more points in 3 of last 5 games •Career-high 27 points at CS Northridge (2/2) Hodges has been playing some excellent basketball for the 49ers. He has scored 24 or more points in three (UCI, CSN, UCSB) of his last five games and four of his last seven. Saturday against UCSB he had 24 points, knocking down a career-high tying six three-pointers. In his last five games he is averaging 19.4 points per game. He had 24 points in the loss to UC Irvine and then came back with a career-high 27 points in the big win at CS Northridge. He broke out of a mini slump in his three-point shooting on Saturday. In his previous two games he was just 2-16 from long-range (0-6 at UOP, 2-10 vs. Cal Poly), but Saturday against UCSB he was 6-9 from three-point range. Hodges leads the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game and has broken the double digit barrier in 16 of the 22 games this season. In Big West Conference games he stands at 16.4 points per outing. He has eclipsed 20 points five times this year (20 vs. UMBC, 23 at CSUF, 24 vs. UCI, 27 at CSUN, 24 vs. UCSB). In the win at CSUF he hit a three-pointer with less than three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Hodges was five-of-10 from long-range in that contest. Overall this year Hodges is shooting .390 (64-164) from three-point range. He knocked down six treys at CS Northridge and has hit five three's in three games, at Sacramento State (5-11), at UCSB (5-13) and at CS Fullerton (5-10). With 64 made three's already this season, Hodges is No. 6 on the single season chart. The school-record for made three's in a season is 79 set by Tony Darden in 2002-03. #3-SHAWN HAWKINS •11 points & 10 rebounds vs. UCI; 3rd double-double this year •22 points at Pacific After scoring 22 points at Pacific on February 4, Hawkins has struggled the past two games scoring a total of 14 points. He had nine points and six rebounds against UCSB and five points and five boards in the win over Cal Poly. At Pacific he knocked down four three-pointers en route to his 22 points, his 13th double-figure scoring game of the season. Hawkins has three double-double's this season, with the most recent coming at home against UC Irvine (1/28) where he had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hawkins currently is averaging 11.6 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game. Hawkins hit the game-winning three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in the game to lift the 49ers to the win at CS Fullerton (1/19). He finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, hitting four-of-eight shots from three-point range. He picked up his second double-double of the year at Cal Poly (1/9) finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the 49ers win. His first double-double came against UC Davis (1/2) as he finished with a career-high tying 24 points and 11 rebounds. #2-LOUIS DARBY •Season-high 15 points vs. Cal Poly •Shooting .807 (46-57) at the free throw line Louis Darby is stepping up big time for the 49ers. Darby had a season-high 15 points in last Thursday's win over Cal Poly, including hitting seven-of-seven free throws. His three-point play with 2:54 remaining tied the game at 63-63. In the win at CS Northridge he had a then season-high 14 points in 18 minutes of action. In the last 12 games he is averaging 8.2 points per game. Darby had 10 points in the win over CS Northridge at home and 10 points at Cal Poly on January 9, hitting five-of-seven shots from the field. In the last 12 games he is shooting .593 (32-54) from the field. Darby is currently averaging 5.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game overall, but in Big West game his scoring numbers jump to 8.2 points per outing. He is shooting an impressive .810 (47-58) at the free throw line, but in his last eight games he has hit 27-of-30 (.900) of his charity tosses. In the first nine games of the year (before not playing vs. Cornell), Darby had a total of 24 points. In the last 12 games he has scored 97 points. #30-KEJUAN JOHNSON •Career-high 20 points at CS Northridge •10 points, 6 rebounds at Pacific Game-in and game-out Kejuan Johnson shows his all-around game. Thursday night he had 12 points and two rebounds in the win over Cal Poly. In the at CS Northridge he scored a career-high 20 points, adding six assists and five rebounds. He was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Against UC Irvine he scored just six points, but added four rebounds, four assists and a career-high six steals in 32 minutes. In the big win at Fullerton he had 11 points, six rebounds and a career-high seven assists in 34 minutes of action. At UC Riverside he had 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Johnson is averaging 11.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game while shooting .468 (22-47) from three-point range. At Cal Poly (1/9) he finished with 14 points, three steals and a career-high eight rebounds. He scored 10 of the 49ers first 12 points to start the second half and help rally LBSU from a nine-point deficit. He has scored in double figures in 10 of his 15 games. #55-AARON NIXON •Career-high 22 points vs. CS Northridge (1/15) •11 points, 4 rebounds against UCSB on Saturday Nixon is still second on the team averaging 12.3 points per game and he checks in at 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. But he has struggled some recently in the scoring department. In his last four games (he sat out the win at CS Northridge game due to a violation of team rules) he is averaging 10.0 points per outing while shooting .298 (14-47) from the field and .118 (2-17) from three-point range. Thursday against Cal Poly he had five points, five assists and a team-high six rebounds and in Saturday's loss to UCSB he had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. He has hit double digits in scoring 16 times this season, but just twice (11 point efforts) in the last four games. At UC Riverside (1/21) he had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists and in the win at CS Fullerton (1/19) he finished with 16 points and three rebounds. In the home victory over CS Northridge (1/15) he scored a career-high 22 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. He is second on the team with his 54 assists and is third in blocked shots (12). #21-MARK DAWSON •Career-high 10 points vs. Pacific at home •6 points and 7 rebounds against UCSB on Saturday Dawson finished with six points, seven rebounds and two blocks on Saturday against UCSB. The seven rebounds represented his second-best showing of the season. In Thursday's win over Cal Poly he had four points and five rebounds. One of his better games came in the win at CS Fullerton as he finished with five points, six rebounds, two blocks and a career-high three assists. He had a career-high 10 points and added five rebounds against Pacific on January 13. In Big West games Dawson is averaging 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting .611 (22-36) from the field. Overall he is averaging 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting .609 (39-64) from the field. Dawson has scored eight points three times this season (Cal Poly, Cornell, Pepperdine). In the Pepperdine game he grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Dawson leads the team with 20 blocked shots this year, including three against San Francisco State. #20-KEVIN HOUSTON •Leads team with 78 assists •14 points against UCSB Kevin Houston has hit double digits in scoring in three of his last four games. Houston had 14 points on Saturday against UCSB and 11 points and five assists in the win over Cal Poly on Thursday. In his last four games he is averaging 11.75 points per game. In his previous seven games (prior to the CSUN road game) he had hit double digits just one time (11 at CS Fullerton). He had a stellar game in the win at CS Northridge, finishing with 13 points and a season-high nine assists with just two turnovers. Houston leads the team with 78 assists (3.5 apg) and checks in at 10.1 points per game. He has hit double digits in scoring 12 times this year. Houston had a season-high 17 points at Pepperdine and tallied 16 points against LMU and San Jose State. He has 11 games with four or more assists. Houston is one of two players with more assists (78) than turnovers (57) for the 49ers. He stepped up in overtime in the 49ers win at CS Fullerton. He scored six of his 11 points in overtime, including hitting four-of-four free throws in the 97-96 victory. #44-DOMINIQUE RICKS •12 points and 5 rebounds vs. CS Northridge (1/15) •43 offensive rebounds Ricks played just five minutes on Thursday against Cal Poly but finished with two points and three offensive rebounds. Saturday against UCSB ha had seven rebounds, two blocks and two points. The seven boards represented his third-best output of the season (10 at Sac. State, 9 at Cal). Ricks is currently averaging 4.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting .603 (41-68) from the field. Of his 85 total rebounds this year, 43 are on the offensive glass (second-most on the team). In the first meeting with CS Northridge on January 15 he finished with 12 points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. Of his five boards, four were offensive and he hit six-of-seven shots from the field. The double-digit scoring effort was his second of the year. He scored a career-high 18 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds, at Sacramento State on December 5. He had a big game at Cal earlier this season finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. #4-JAZZ HENDERSON •Career-high 23 points at Sacramento State Henderson had a solid outing at CS Northridge finishing with five points and three rebounds in 19 minutes of action. He has played some great defense all season-long, especially in the two outings against CSUN. He has been matched up against the Big West's leading scorer Mike Efevberha and limited him to just 10 points in the game at LBSU and nine points on Thursday evening. He had a big game at Sacramento State on December 5 where he scored a career-high 23 points, adding two rebounds and two assists in just 20 minutes of action. Henderson scored nine of the 49ers first 16 points of the second half, staking the 49ers to a 65-60 lead. He was 8-13 from the field and hit his first three-pointer of the season. In the win over UMBC he finished with seven points and a career-high four assists. Henderson is fifth on the team with 25 assists and is averaging 4.0 points per game on the season while shooting .725 (29-40) at the free throw line. #15-STERLING BYRD •Career-high 13 points vs. SFSU Byrd played 12 minutes at CS Northridge finishing with three points and three rebounds. Two of his rebounds were on the offensive glass. He started against Pacific, playing 11 minutes and finishing with four points and an assist. In the win over Cal Poly on Thursday he played four minutes, but grabbed three rebounds. Byrd scored a season-high 13 points in the win over San Francisco State and followed that with 12 points in the win over LMU. He grabbed a season-high five rebounds in both games as well. Against LMU he was 4-4 from three-point range in the 93-85 triumph. Overall Byrd is averaging 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Byrd is shooting .421 (16-38) from three-point range this year. #11-ARTIS GANT •Career-high 10 points vs. SFSU Gant played six minutes at CS Northridge, finishing with one assist. Gant had not played in the previous three games and has not played in the past three outings since the CSUN contest. He started against Cornell (12/30), finishing with two points and two assists in 12 minutes of action. He had his first double-digit scoring game as a collegian when he tallied 10 points against San Francisco State. Gant also added a career-best four assists in 19 minutes of action. Against LMU he did not score in 13 minutes, but finished with two assists and a steal while playing outstanding defense. In the opener at UNLV he had five points, one assist and one steal in 11 minutes. Gant is averaging 1.5 points and 0.85 assists per game is a perfect 4-4 from three-point range. #0-ONYE IBEKWE •Season-high 12 points and 7 rebounds in win over Cornell Ibekwe did not travel last weekend and will not play in the two games this week. Ibekwe is suspended indefinitely due to a violation of team rules. Ibekwe had eight points and a season-high 10 rebounds in 22 minutes at UC Riverside on January 21. The double-digit rebounding game was his fifth as a 49er. He also had a big game against CS Northridge (1/15), finishing with six points and nine rebounds. Of his nine rebounds, four were on the offensive glass. He also was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. In the win over LMU he had nine points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes. Against Cornell he scored a season-high 12 points while grabbing seven boards. Ibekwe is currently averaging 4.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and is shooting .541 (20-37) from the field. #32-DOMINIC FREEMAN •Started three games this year (UNLV, Cal, Cornell) Freeman played 12 minutes in the win at CS Northridge finishing with two points and a career-high four rebounds. It was his first action of the year since the UC Davis game on January 2. Freeman started against Cornell (12/30), playing four minutes in the contest, garnering one offensive rebound. He had three rebounds at Sacramento State in 11 minutes of action and is averaging 1.4 boards per game, along with 0.9 points per outing. His best game of the season was a three-point, three-rebound game vs. San Francisco State. In the UNLV game he had a strong opening game with five points, two rebounds and an assist in 10 minutes. #35-ULRIC PATTILLO •Season-high 6 minutes of action vs. SFSU Pattillo has played in three games this season (UNLV, SFSU, UC Davis). He played two minutes against UC Davis and knocked down a three-pointer, his first of the season in three attempts. He played a season-high six minutes against San Francisco State finishing with two points, three rebounds and one assist. The three rebounds represents a career-high for him. Played two minutes at UNLV, taking one three-pointer and missing it. #24-BRICE GALLOW •Saw first action of season vs. SFSU Has played in three games (SFSU, Sacramento State, UC Davis). Played two minutes against UC Davis, grabbing one rebound. Was on the court for four minutes vs. San Francisco State and played 30 seconds at Sacramento State. Is yet to score or take a shot this season. Gallow is a walk-on out of Redondo Union High School. Gallow went through the fall "try-out" session and the coaches liked what they saw and offered him a spot on the team. His best statistical year as a prep came as a junior when he averaged 15 points and three assists per game. 2005-06 Season Results |
