LONG BEACH,CA-- Kejuan Johnson produced a season-high for the second-straight game, scoring 15 points, while adding five assists and four steals as Long Beach State (5-4) won its third in a row following a 76-55 win over visiting Sacramento State (5-6) on Saturday evening.
"The first half was a good half of basketball," said Head Coach Larry Reynolds, whose team led by 17 in the first half and held the Hornets to just a 31 percent clip in the first half. "We did almost everything we wanted to do defensively. We moved the ball well on offense and made some shots. I don't think Sacramento shot the ball as well as they normally do. I'd like credit our defense for that."
Aaron Nixon scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Kevin Houston added 10 points as the 49ers shot 49 percent for the contest and limited the Hornets to just a 36 percent clip.
Alex Bausley had 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Sacramento State, who were coming off an overtime win over Pacific on Wednesday.
Chris Peys putback made it 53-33 with 13:47 left as the 49ers extended their lead to 20 points early in the second half and remained in front for virtually that margin the rest of the way.
Nixon's three-point play on a driving layup with 56.4 seconds left made it 39-22 as The Beach shot 48 percent in the first half. Sacramento State was stung for just a 31 percent clip. LBSU finished the half on a 17-6 run after the Hornets closed to within six.
After the Hornets closed to within 22-16, two free throws by Johnson made it 28-18 with 5:37 left. Just four and a half minutes into the contest, back-to-back three-pointers by Nixon made it 14-6 and forced a Sacramento State timeout.
The 49ers are next in action when they travel to San Jose State on Sunday, December 17.
