Wuesthoff Endowment Closing in on Goal
Scholarship Has Received $121,000 in Pledges in One Year
December 6, 2006
LONG BEACH, CA-- One donor gave his 24 cents, and a little more to the
Bob Wuesthoff Endowment Fund.
After 13 months, the Bob Wuesthoff Endowment is close to reaching its
initial goal of $150,000, for a baseball scholarship named after the former
head coach (1964-69), who wore No. 24 and won the program's first conference
title. After launching in November, 2005, the eight-man committee spearheaded
by LBSU's first Baseball Coach, John McConnell, has received pledges of
$121,000 and collected close to $58,000.
The eight-man committee of former players and coaches; McConnell, John
Gonsalves, Rick Hayes, Barry Wallace, Rod Gaspar, Jack Hoffman, Rick Bryson
and Don Keel, are in the process of raising $150,000 over five years.
Wuesthoff, who has run the 49er Camps for children every summer for over
four decades, began his career as the freshman junior varsity coach for
two seasons in 1962. He took over the program in 1964 and won the California
Collegiate Atheltic Association title that same year.
In six years, Wuesthoff compiled a .615 winning percentage, going 161-101-4
from 1964 to 1969. He continued teaching in the physical education department
at Long Beach State into the new Millenium, before retiring. He was also
a former associate athletics director at LBSU and the interim athletics
director in the fall of 1969.
Those interested in donating can contact Dede Rossi in the 49er Athletics
Association at (562) 985-4662. The 49ers hold an annual alumni baseball
game, this year on January 28, coinciding with the Leadoff Dinner on January
26, and a golf tournament on January 27.
