49ers Nearly Come Back from 16 Points Down

49ers Can't Complete Comeback
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (1-11) nearly came back from a 16-point second half deficit, only to fall to defending Patriot League Champion, Army (9-2), 69-59 at the Walter Pyramid on Monday evening. Cara Enright's three-pointer with 1:48 left kept the 49ers at bay and made it 62-55 after the 49ers used a 22-7 run in the second half to close to with one with five and a half minutes left. Karina Figueroa led the 49ers with 17 points, while Enright had a team-high 14 points. Figueroa's fadeaway jumper from the top of the key, made it 52-51 at 5:34 and completed a 22-7 run by The Beach after Army built a 16-point lead early in the second half. LBSU had closed to within 49-42 off a Figueroa jumper in the lane at 11:23, making the run 13-4, as the 49ers chipped away and closed to within one nearly six minutes later.Army led 36-27 at the half thanks to five unaswered points over the final minute after LBSU's 14-6 run got them back in the game and made it 31-27. Figueroa's layup and ensuing free throw by Madison Pagani brought The Beach back into the game, as LBSU closed to within 25-20 at 4:34 after trailing by 12 points in the first half. A layup by Cara Enright extended the lead to 25-13 with 6:38 left after a 9-2 run by the Black Knights forced a 49er timeout and made it 19-12 with 9:06 left in the first half. The 49ers return home after the winter break to host UC Davis on December 28 and Fairfield on December 30. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
