November 17, 2006
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Head Men's Basketball
Coach Larry Reynolds announced today that Greg Russell (G, 5-6, 170, Santa
Cruz, CA, West Valley JC, Santa Cruz HS) and Bryan Emanuel (G, 6-3, 185,
Bellflower, CA, Mayfair HS) have signed National Letters-of-Intent with
the 49ers.
Russell is currently a sophomore at West Valley JC in Northern California.
Last season Russell led the Vikings to a 33-4 mark and an appearance in
the State JC Championship Game. Russell averaged 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds
and 3.7 assists per outing as West Valley won the Coast Conference South
Championship with an 11-1 mark. West Valley defeated Modesto (88-61) and
College of the Sequoias (77-68) to reach the State Championship. Named
to the All-Tournament Team at the State Championships, West Valley defeated
Long Beach City College (84-79) and the City College of San Francisco
(78-68) to reach the title game. West Valley fell to Fullerton JC (81-67)
in the title game. Russell had 11 points and eight assists in the win
over LBCC and 19 points against CCSF. Russell hails from Santa Cruz and
prepped at Santa Cruz High School.
Emanuel is a senior at Mayfair High School where he was a first team All-Suburban
League selection last season. Emanuel, who is an outstanding defensive
player, averaged 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Mayfair finished
the season 19-9 overall and in second place in the Suburban League with
a 10-2 mark. Mayfair lost to Dominguez in the third round of the CIF SS
Division IIAA Championships last year, 60-43.
"Bryan is a local product out of Mayfair High School," said
Reynolds. "He is probably one of the best players in the area. He
is a tremendous athlete who plays the game extremely hard and he can be
a shut-down defender. Greg comes from a winning background. He has great
leadership skills and will fit into our system very well."
