49ers Fall to Mustangs in Three

Cal Poly Dispatches 49ers in Three
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- The 19th-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs swept the Long Beach State 49ers on Friday night in Mott Gym. Game scores were 30-14, 30-19, 31-29 in favor of the Mustangs. Long Beach State had its six-match win streak snapped and fell to 16-5, 6-2 Big West, while the Mustangs improved to 17-4, 9-0 Big West. Mischa Hasalikova posted nine kills in the losing effort for The Beach. Iris Murray recorded a match-high 20 digs as well. Kylie Atherstone paced the Mustangs with a match-best 15 kills. The Mustangs used a consistent offensive and defensive strategy to come away with a 30-14 game one victory. The Mustangs jumped out to a 10-3 lead after a 49er attack error, and quickly built a 15-point lead (23-8) after an Alicia Waller kill. An Ashleigh Bertoni kill ended the game. Cal Poly hit an impressive .625 in the game (no attack errors) and out-blocked LBSU, 8-0. Cal Poly opened the second game with a 10-3 start, before pulling away late for the 30-19 victory. Long Beach State used a 12-5 run to tie the game at 15-15, courtesy of a Mustang attack error. Cal Poly responded with a crucial 5-0 run to go up 20-15, and never relinquished its lead to take a 2-0 match lead. The 49ers hit .000 for the second consecutive time in the match. The 49ers came out with more intensity and enthusiasm in the third game and played Cal Poly neck and neck the entire way, and even fought off three match points, before falling 31-29. The 49ers return to action tomorrow night at UC Santa Barbara at 7 pm.
