49ers Topple Davis, 3-0 LB Hits .302 for the Match

LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 match sweep of UC Davis in non-conference action from the Walter Pyramid on Friday night. Game scores were 30-24, 30-12, 30-23.
Long Beach State improved to 13-4 overall, while UC Davis, who will join the Big West Conference officially on July 1, 2007, fell to 2-17. LBSU has never dropped a set in all five meetings with the Aggies. The victory also gave 22nd year head coach, Brian Gimmillaro 591 for his career, nine wins shy of 600.
"We got to play a lot of people tonight," said Gimmillaro. "We got to use different lineups tonight, and get a few of our players some rest."
Mischa Hasalikova paced The Beach with a match-best 12 kills, while Mariko Crum chipped in 11 kills. Talaya Whitfield posted a match-best 16 digs. Nicole Vargas had 39 assists and directed the 49er offense to a .302 attack percentage.
Rachel Keener led UC Davis with seven kills in the losing effort.
Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead to start the match, and eventually held on for the 30-24 game one victory. The 49ers built a 6-0 advantage after a Dyanne Lawlor kill, before the Aggies rallied to even the score at 14-14 courtesy of a Keener kill. The 49ers responded with an 8-2 run to push their lead to 22-16 after a Crum kill, and took the game after another Crum kill.
It was all LBSU in the second frame, as the 49ers defeated the Aggies, 30-12. Long Beach State also used a .367 attack percentage to its advantage for the 18-point victory. The 49ers led 14-6 after a Davis attack error and proceeded to go on a 16-6 run the rest of the way. Davis hit -.163 and committed 13 attack errors in the frame.
The 49ers prevailed in the third set with a 30-23 victory.
