49ers Use A Big Second Half In Victory
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA—Long Beach State used a big second half to come away with a 79-66 win at Cal Poly on Monday evening at Mott Gym. Shawn Hawkins and Aaron Nixon both had 15 points to lead Long Beach (6-7, 1-1). Derek Stockalper led the Mustangs (4-10, 2-2) with 18 points. The 49ers came out hot in the second half and eventually out-scored the Mustangs 52-30 in the second stanza. Kejuan Johnson led the early charge and Hawkins and Nixon finished up. Johnson scored 10 of the 49ers first 12 points in the half to set the tempo and keep the 49ers close. Nixon kept things going by converting three, three-point plays en route to 12 second half points and Hawkins dominated inside. Long Beach took the lead for good at the 8:10 mark in the second half on a short jumper by Nixon, 51-50. After the two teams traded buckets, the 49ers went on an 8-2 run to take a 61-54 lead at 5:32 on a jumper by Kevin Houston. Cal Poly responded to pull to within 63-61 on two free throws by Trae Clark at 4:00, but Long Beach reeled off nine consecutive points to take a 72-61 lead with 1:32. Hawkins picked up his second double-double of the year with 11 rebounds to go along with his 15 points. Johnson finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Louis Darby had a season-high 10 points. Gabe Stephenson added 14 points for the Mustangs and Chaz Thomas added 12. Cal Poly shot .377 (23-61) for the game and committed 24 turnovers, 12 in each half. The Mustangs did out-rebound the 49eres 40 to 36. Long Beach shot an impressive .586 (17-29) in the second half and had just four second half turnovers. The 49ers also were 15-21 (.714) at the free throw line in the half as the Mustangs got in foul trouble early in the half. Dawin Whiten and Titus Sheldon both fouled out for Cal Poly. The 49ers struggled in the first half, falling behind 36-27. Long Beach had 12 turnovers in the half while shooting just .387 (12-31) from the field and 0-9 from three-point range. The Mustangs turned the ball over 12 times as well, but were 8-of-10 at the free throw line and knocked down four three-pointers. Stephenson had 12 points in the first half for the Mustangs. Cal Poly took advantage of 49er turnovers late in the half. With the game tied 21-21 at the 6:44 mark, the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to take a 29-21 at the 4:52 mark.
