Dirtbags Picked No. 22 by Baseball America DURHAM, NC-- Long Beach State infielder Evan Longoria (Downey) was named to the first team, and righthander Jared Hughes (Laguna Beach) was a third team selection on Baseball America's pre-season All-America teams. Overall, the Dirtbags, who went 37-22 last year and feature 23 newcomers, are rated No. 22 in the publication's poll. The complete collegiate preview will hit news stands at the end of January. The Beach, which carries one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, feature a road series at No. 1 Texas, two series with arch rival No. 5 CS Fullerton, and games against No. 7 Rice, and No. 11 Pepperdine. LBSU opens the season against No. 17 USC, on February 3, with Friday and Sunday's games played at Blair Field. "When we start on January 9, we'll see how quickly our guys come together, especially the new players, and run with what they learned in the fall," said fifth year Head Coach Mike Weathers, whose team leads off the season with the Leadoff Weekend beginning on January 26th and running through 28th, featuring a dinner, golf tournament and alumni game. "With how our tough our pre-season schedule is, I'm looking forward to the challenge of getting going, and seeing where we are at." Previously, Longoria and Hughes were third team All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, respectively. Collegiate Baseball puts the Dirtbags at No. 16 in their pre-season poll.
