SANTA BARBARA, CA– Robert Tarr and Paul Lotman led four 49ers in double digits kills with 13 as Long Beach State opened up its regular season with a 30-23, 30-18, 30-19 victory over USC in the first round of the 42nd Annual UCSB/Elephant Bar Collegiate Invitational on Friday. The Beach hit an impressive .530 in the victory. In the nightcap the 49ers rallied for a 23-30, 31-29, 30-27, 26-30, 15-8 win over Cal State Northridge. The 49ers are 2-0 on the season and will face UCLA in the Saturday's championship match at 6:30 pm.
Joining Tarr and Lotman on the offensive end were Francisco Valdez with a career-high 12 kills and Duncan Budinger with 10. Teddy Liles led the 49ers with eight blocks while adding nine kills. All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand recorded 55 assists on the afternoon.
The 49ers hit over .440 in each game, including an impressive .760 (19-0-25) in game three. Lotman hit .500 (13-3-20), Liles .615 (9-1-13), Budinger .625 (10-0-16) and Tarr .579 (13-2-19). USC finished the game with a .237 hitting percentage. C.J. Schellenberg led the Trojans with 14 kills.
In the nightcap, Tarr recorded 35 kills, one off his career-high of 36 kills which he set last year at Stanford. Valdez added 14 kills, a new career-high, and Budinger chipped in with 11 kills. The 49ers hit .290 for the match.
With 48 kills in the two matches, Tarr surpassed the 1,000-kill mark. He currently stands at 1,007 career kills, becoming just the 15th player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills. Hildebrand also surpassed a milestone in the opener, recording his 5,000th career assist in the win.
The 49ers move into the championship finals where they will take on UCLA at 6:30 pm on Saturday night. |
