1. The 49ers at Home
Long Beach State is 22-3 over its last 25 home games dating back to Nov. 24, 2004. Also in that span, LBSU has knocked off two ranked opponents (Houston, Dec. 20, 2004, 54-52 and USC, Nov. 23, 2005, 51-46). The 49ers are 10-1 at home this season.
2. Defense
Opponents are shooting just .352 against the 49ers this season. LBSU ranks No. 1 in the Big West (No. 13 in the nation, as of Jan. 31) in field goal pct. defense. Long Beach State also ranks No. 1 in the league in scoring defense (59.3). In fact the 49ers held the league's scoring leader, Cal Poly, to 18 points under its season average, after their 78-58 win on Jan. 9.
3. Conference Play
At 7-0 in the Big West, Long Beach State has its best start in league play since the 1988-89 season when LBSU went undefeated (18-0) in its first year in the conference.
4. Offense
The 49ers are averaging nearly 74 points per game in league play, and dropped a conference-high 102 points at CS Northridge on Sunday (Jan. 15). LBSU has won 10 of its last 11 games and have averaged 72.4 points per game in that span. The 49ers rank No. 2 in scoring offense (68.5 ppg), and rank No. 1 in scoring margin (+9.2).
5. Karina Figueroa
The freshman guard has posted seven straight double digit scoring efforts, and is averaging 12.9 points per game in league play. Figueroa has also compiled 24 assists and 10 steals in conference play this season.
6. The Winning Streak
LBSU has won seven straight games and 10 of its last 11. The 49ers had two seven-game win streaks last season (Dec. 30-Jan. 22) and Feb. 10-Feb. 26). Prior to the 2004-05 season, the longest winning streak over seven games was the 1990-91 season when the 49ers won 16 consecutive (Jan. 25-Mar. 16). The 14-5 start is also the best start thru 19 games since the 1991-92 season.

The Long Beach State women's basketball team (14-5, 7-0) plays four of its next five games on the road, beginning with UC Riverside (6-12, 2-5) on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 pm, and CS Fullerton (6-13, 3-4) on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7 pm. Long Beach State defeated both Riverside and Fullerton two weeks ago at the Walter Pyramid. Lauren Bull currently stands at No. 2 with 103 three-pointers...Long Beach State reached 60% shooting from the field for the second time this season after its 29-point win over Irvine on Jan. 28 (61%)...The 49ers scored 41 points in the first half vs. Irvine on Saturday, marking the third time this season that LBSU has scored 40+ points in the first half of a game this season.

The Long Beach State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games after its 79-50 win over UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon from the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers remained perfect in Big West play as well at 7-0, and improved to 11-1 at home this season. In fact LBSU is 22-3 over its last 25 home games dating back to Dec. 20, 2004. The 49ers had two seven-game win streaks last season. Crystal McCutcheon led the 49ers (14-5, 7-0) with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor (2-of-2 from three-point range). Jayme Connors added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, and Karina Figueroa posted 11 points and three assists. It is the seventh straight game that Figueroa has posted double-digits in scoring. Kelly Cochran paced UC Irvine (4-15, 2-5) with 14 points. Long Beach State out-scored UCI 50-22 in the paint and had a 16-2 advantage in fast break points. The 49ers shot nearly 61 percent from the field (31-of-51), and held the Anteaters to just a 28 percent clip (18-of-64). The 49ers rank No. 1 in the Big West and No. 21 in the nation in field goal percentage defense. Long Beach State held leads of 22, 28, and 31, and shot 66 percent in the second half. LBSU jumped on UC Irvine early and built a five-point lead, 13-8, after a Figueroa jumper, and extended its lead to 11, 23-12 after another successful Figueroa jump shot at the 7:30 mark. The Beach kept its offensive onslaught in the stanza with an 18-11 run over a six minute span to take its biggest lead period. The 49ers shot a blistering 56 percent from the field (17-of-30) and out-rebounded UCI, 22-13.

These Players Come Through Down the Stretch:
Both Karina Figueroa and Crystal McCutcheon have proven to be clutch in the last five minutes of games this season. Figueroa is 14-of-30 from the field (.467) and has converted 14-of-17 free throws when there is five minutes left in the game, while McCutcheon is 21-of-24 from the charity stripe, and has compiled seven steals in the last five minutes of the contest.
49ers Shoot Better in the Second Half:
Long Beach State shoots just .375 in the first half of its games this season (218-of-582), but shoots at a .429 clip in the second half (241-of-562).

49ers Ink Six for the 2006-07 Season:
Long Beach State women's basketball head coach, Mary Hegarty, announced that six players, Lauren Bagley, Sherissa Bayes, Lindsey Beckner, Nondi Johnson, Lauren Sims, and Ally Wade have all signed National Letters-of-Intent to enroll at Long Beach State for the 2006-07 season. "It's a very talented and deep recruiting class," said Hegarty. "We addressed all of our needs at the post position with four new post players. This class has a strong work ethic and strong academic backgrounds. They will fit nicely with the players we have returning next season. This class will help take our program to the next level."
Wade Top-5 in the OC:
Long Beach State incoming recruit, Ally Wade, was selected as one of the OC Register's Top-5 Players to watch this season. Wade made first team All-County and All-CIF after averaging 18.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists and leading her team (El Dorado) to the Division II-AA semifinals. The OC Register also listed 49er incoming recruit, Lauren Bagley (Foothill), as another player on its watch list.
Big West Pre-Season Predictions are Out:
The Big West Conference had its annual media day on Nov. 2 and the Long Beach State women's basketball team was picked to finish second by both the conference's eight coaches and the media. Senior Crystal McCutcheon also made the pre-season all-conference team. In the media poll, the women compiled 67 points, with one first place vote behind UCSB's 79 points and nine first place votes. In the coaches poll, the women received two first place votes and 43 overall points to UCSB's 46.
Four Double-Headers this Season:
The 49er women will play four doubleheaders with the men's team this season. The first was on December 30 as the women defeated South Dakota State and the men defeated Cornell. On January 28 both teams tangled with UC Irvine in The Walter Pyramid (women won 79-50). On February 11 on the 49er campus the women will take on Pacific (3 pm) while the men tangle with UCSB (5:30 pm). The final doubleheader will be on March 4 at UC Irvine (4 & 7 pm).
The Beach on TV:
When Long Beach State tangles with UC Santa Barbara on February 18 in Santa Barbara, the game will be aired on Fox Sports West 2 at 5:00 p.m.
The 05-06 Schedule:
Five of Long Beach State's non-conference opponents advanced to the NCAA post-season last season, including TCU, Houston, USC, Montana, and Richmond. Conference rival, UC Santa Barbara also advanced to the NCAA post-season as well.
