49ers Head To CSUN and Pacific
THE RECORDS •Beach looking for win number 10 Long Beach State saw its three-game win streak snapped on Saturday as first place UC Irvine defeated the 49ers 73-67. The Beach is 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference. This week the 49ers hit the road, traveling to CS Northridge and Pacific. CS Northridge is 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the Big West. Pacific is 14-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big West. Thursday's game at CSUN will be televised live on KVMD and Saturday's game at Pacific will be televised live on FOX Sports West 2 at 5 pm. THE COACH •Larry Reynolds in his fourth year at LBSU Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 30-72 (.294) in three-plus years as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 140-107 (.567) in his ninth year as a head coach. THE SERIES •49ers lead series with CSUN 23-16 •49ers lead series with Pacific 46-30 The 49ers lead their series with Cal State Northridge by a 23-17 count. Long Beach defeated CSUN 84-73 on January 15 in Long Beach, snapping a six-game losing streak to the Matadors. Long Beach is 7-9 all-time at CSUN and has lost the last three meetings at The Matadome. Last year CSUN won 68-66 in Northridge. Long Beach leads its series with Pacific by a 46-30 count. The Tigers, who have won five in a row in the series, defeated the 49ers 78-72 on January 13 in Long Beach. The 49ers are 14-20 all-time in Stockton and have lost on their last three trips there, including an 87-58 setback last season. CS NORTHRIDGE FACTS •Matadors are 2-4 in Big West Last weekend CS Northridge split on its trip to the Central Coast, winning at UCSB (59-46) and losing at Cal Poly (73-54). CSUN is 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the Big West. In the win over UCSB Jonathan Heard had 15 points and Calvin Chitwood 14. The Matadors forced 25 UCSB turnovers and limited the Gauchos to a .347 (17-49) field goal percentage. On the year, Mike Efevbreha leads the team in scoring at 19.2 points per game while shooting .383 (41-107) from three-point range. Chitwood checks in at 11.6 points per game and Heard is at 11.1. As a team CSUN is averaging 72.2 points per game and shooting .426 from the field. The Matadors are allowing 72.2 points per game and opponents are shooting at a .444 clip. PACIFIC FACTS •Tigers sweep Central Coast trip Pacific improved to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big West after winning at Cal Poly (64-62) and at UCSB (65-53). In the win over the Gauchos, Christian Maraker had 20 points and Mike Webb 11. Maraker has been the main man for UOP this season, averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Guard Johnny Gray is averaging 14.7 points per game and leads the team with 66 assists. Gray is shooting an impressive .473 (44-93) from three-point range. As a team the Tigers are averaging 74.2 points per game and shooting .488 from the field. Opponents are averaging 64.8 points and shooting .410. In Big West contests though the Tigers are out-scoring their opponents just 70.3 to 69.0. 49ERS AVERAGING 81.4 PPG •79.3 points per game in Big West play Despite being held to 67 points, its second lowest point total of the year, last Saturday by UC Irvine, the 49er offense has put up some impressive numbers. The Beach is averaging a Big West-leading 81.4 points per game. In the latest NCAA stats (1/23), the 49ers ranked No. 11 in the nation in scoring. In Big West Conference outings the 49ers are averaging 79.3 points per game. Long Beach has scored 80 or more points nine times this season and have topped 70 points in 15 of their 18 games. Last year the 49ers averaged just 60.7 points per game. Long Beach scored a season-high 108 points when they defeated San Francisco State 108-51 on Nov. 27. LONG RANGE SHOOTING •8.44 made three's per game •School record 14 made three's at Fullerton The 49ers are shooting .356 (152-427) from three-point range this season, averaging 8.44 made three's per game. In the latest NCAA stats (1/23), the 49ers ranked No. 23 in the country in three-pointers made per game. In the win at CS Fullerton (1/19) the 49ers were 14-34 (.412) from long-range. The 14 made three's breaks the school record and the 34 attempts is the second-most in school history. Earlier this season at Portland the 49ers tied the school record by hitting 13 treys (13-21, .619). The 49ers have hit double digits in made three's in eight of their 18 games. Long Beach is creeping up on the school-record for made three's which is 200 set in the 1992-93 campaign. Currently, the 49ers have connected on 152 three's this year. BALANCED SCORING •Four players in double digits Averaging 81.4 points per game overall, the 49ers have four players who are averaging in double digits. Jibril Hodges (14.3), Aaron Nixon (12.9), Shawn Hawkins (11.8), and Kejuan Johnson (11.1) are all above the magical double digit line this season. FREE THROW SHOOTING •49ers a perfect 13-13 at the charity stripe at Fullerton The 49ers have been up and down this year at the free throw line. They currently stand at .696 (300-431) on the year overall and .735 (100-136) in Big West play. In the January 19 game at CS Fullerton the 49ers were a perfect 13-13 (1.000) at the line. Saturday against UCI the 49ers were 13-16 (.813). In its last four games the 49ers are 64-78 (.821) at the charity stripe. The 49ers are averaging 23.9 free throw attempts per game this year. Last year the 49ers went to the line an average of just 17.0 times per game. The 49ers were 337-511 (.659) at the line last year. SEASON LOW 11 TURNOVERS •14 assists, 11 turnovers vs. Pacific •Back-to-back games with more assists than turnovers For the first time this year the 49ers recorded back-to-back games with more assists than turnovers. Despite losing to Pacific, the 49ers had a season-low 11 turnovers, compared to 14 assists. In the win over CSUN, LBSU had 15 assists and 14 turnovers. At CS Fullerton the 49ers had 14 assists and 14 turnovers and against UCI the 49ers had 16 assists and 14 miscues. Seven times this year the 49ers have registered more assists than turnovers, including three of the last five games. FORCING TURNOVERS •Opponents averaging 17.3 per outing 49er opponents are averaging more turnovers per game (17.3) this season than the 49ers (16.05). UC Irvine had 11 assists compared to 20 turnovers last Saturday and in the win at UC Riverside the Highlanders had 10 assists and 18 turnovers. In the last four games 49er opponents have had more turnovers than assists (81 turnovers to 51 assists). Eight times this season the 49ers have forced their opponents into more turnovers than assists, with seven of those outings coming in the last nine games. In Big West Conference games opponents are averaging 19.0 turnovers per game. STEALING AWAY •Season-high 14 steals vs. UCI The 49ers had a season-high 14 steals in Saturday game against UC Irvine, marking the fifth time this season Long Beach has recorded 10 or more steals in a game. Junior Kejuan Johnson had a career-high six steals against the Anteaters and Jibril Hodges garnered three. Long Beach is averaging 7.67 steals per game this year. Kevin Houston leads the way with 25 steals ((1.39) and Johnson is right behind him with 24 (2.18). The six steals is not a school-record though. Antrone Lee holds that mark with 10 steals on February 19, 1998 vs. UC Irvine. FIRST MEETING WITH CSUN •Aaron Nixon scores career-high 22 points In the first meeting on January 15 in Long Beach, the 49ers rode a career-high 22 points from Aaron Nixon to an 84-73 triumph. Long Beach led 49-31 at the half, only to see CSUN fight back and pull to within five points with about five minutes gone in the second half. The Matadors still trailed by five, 71-66, with 3:18 left, only to see LBSU to out-score CSUN 13-7 to close out the game. Long Beach hit nine-of-10 free throws in the final 1:09 of the game. Jibril Hodges added 19 points and Dominique Ricks 12. LBSU was 25-30 at the free throw line and forced 21 turnovers. Thomas Shewmake led CSUN with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jonathan Heard added 13 points. FIRST MEETING WITH UOP •13-0 run late in game seals victory The 49ers led Pacific 67-62 with 4:30 left in the contest, but the Tigers would go on a 13-0 run over the next 3:30 to take a 75-67 lead with just one minute left on the clock. Pacific was able to hold on for a 78-72 win on January 13. Christian Maraker had 20 points and 10 rebounds while Johnny Gray added 20 points for the Tigers. Pacific out-rebounded the 49ers 43 to 34 and had just 13 turnovers. Aaron Nixon led Long Beach with 17 points, Kejuan Johnson added 15 and Mark Dawson 10. Trailing 53-50 with 13:56 left, the 49ers went on a 14-5 run over the next seven-plus minutes to take a 64-58 lead at the 6:30 mark. ON THE ROAD •Beach 3-6 away from Walter Pyramid The 49ers have had their problems on the road, but are riding a three-game winning streak after winning at Cal Poly (79-66) on January 9, at CS Fullerton (97-96, ot) on 1/19 and at UC Riverside (82-70) on 1/21. Overall the 49ers are 3-6 away from the Walter Pyramid this season. Last year the 49ers were 2-15 on the road (1-13 true road games, 1-2 at neutral sites). Over the past three-plus years the 49ers are just 6-48 away from home (5-45 true road games, 1-3 at neutral sites). The last time the 49ers won three true road games in a row was in the 2001-02 season when they won four in a row (Jan. 31-Feb. 16) away from the Walter Pyramid. HODGES ON CAREER CHARTS •15th 49er to eclipse 1,000 career points (1,077) •Breaks school record for three-pointers made It came just 24 seconds into the January 13th game against Pacific. Jibril Hodges hit his first shot of the game giving him 1,000 career points. He is just the 15th player in school history to surpass that plateau, and he joins his father, Craig, on that short list. The elder Hodges ranks No. 5 all-time with 1,476 points. Jibril currently stands at No. 12 all-time with 1,077 points. Saturday against UC Irvine he had a career-high tying 24 points. In the win at UC Riverside (1/21) he broke the school record for career three-pointers, hitting his first of the night and giving him 212 in his career. Hodges stands alone in first place on the 49er career chart in three-pointers made (215) and he is second on three-pointers attempted (577). His next milestone will be to move into the top 10 in the Big West Conference for career three-pointers. Holding down the No. 10 spot is Ben Larson of Cal Poly and Mark Hull of UCSB with 217 made three's. #1-JIBRIL HODGES •Leads team in scoring at 14.3 ppg •Career-high tying 24 points vs. UC Irvine Hodges scored a season-high and career-high tying 24 points in Saturday tough loss at home to UC Irvine. He also added three assists and three steals to the cause. Hodges leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game and has broken the double digit barrier in 13 of the 18 games this season. His previous season-high was a 23-point effort in the win at CS Fullerton. He has eclipsed 20 points three times this year (20 vs. UMBC). In the win at CSUF he hit a three-pointer with less than three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Hodges was five-of-10 from long-range in that contest. In the win over CS Northridge (1/15) he had for 19 points, 14 in the first six minutes of the game. Despite scoring just eight points in the win at UC Riverside, Hodges is averaging 18.5 points per game in his last four outings. Overall this year Hodges is shooting .385 (52-130) from three-point range. Hodges has hit at least one three-pointer in each game this season, knocking down a season-high five three's (5-11) at Sacramento State, at UCSB (5-13) and at CS Fullerton (5-10). With 50 made three's already this season, Hodges is tied for No. 11 on the single season chart. Last year he knocked down 74 (74-197) treys, good for the No. 2 single season mark all-time at LBSU. He holds three of the top 13 single season three-point marks in school history. #3-SHAWN HAWKINS •11 points & 10 rebounds vs. UCI; 3rd double-double this year •Career-high tying 24 points vs. UC Davis Hawkins picked up his third double-double of the year on Saturday against UCI with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He currently is averaging 11.8 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game. In Big West outings he stands at 7.6 rebounds per game. Hawkins hit the game-winning three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in the game to lift the 49ers to the win at CS Fullerton (1/19). He finished with 18 points and five rebounds, hitting four-of-eight shots from three-point range. In his last three games Hawkins is averaging 13.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He picked up his second double-double of the year at Cal Poly (1/9) finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the 49ers win. His first double-double came against UC Davis (1/2) finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The 24 points ties his career-high which he set last year at Cal Poly. Hawkins was 9-of-11 from the field against the Aggies and three-of-four from three-point range. He had a stellar game in the win over UMBC, finishing with 17 points and four rebounds. Hawkins was 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range. He has hit double digits in scoring 12 times this year. #30-KEJUAN JOHNSON •Career-high 18 points at UC Riverside •6 points, 4 assists, 6 steals vs. UC Irvine Game-in and game-out Kejuan Johnson shows his all-around game. Saturday against UC Irvine he scored just six points, but added four rebounds, four assists and a career-high six steals in 32 minutes. In the big win at Fullerton he had 11 points, six rebounds and a career-high seven assists in 34 minutes of action. At UC Riverside he had a career-high 18 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Johnson is averaging 11.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting .486 (18-37) from three-point range. At Cal Poly (1/9) he finished with 14 points, three steals and a career-high eight rebounds. He scored 10 of the 49ers first 12 points to start the second half and help rally LBSU from a nine-point deficit. He has scored in double figures in seven of his 11 games. He is one of three players (along with Hodges and Houston) who have more assists (36) than turnovers (33). Johnson became eligible on December 13 after his appeal to the NCAA to grant eligibility came through. #55-AARON NIXON •Career-high 22 points vs. CS Northridge •Held to 9 points against UC Irvine Nixon had scored in double figures in six consecutive games heading into the UC Irvine game, but he was held to nine points in that contest. He did have a career-high eight rebounds and dished out three assists against the Anteaters. Nixon is averaging 132.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game this year for the 49ers. At UC Riverside (1/21) he had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists and in the win at CS Fullerton (1/19) he finished with 16 points and three rebounds. In the victory over CS Northridge (1/15) he scored a career-high 22 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. He is second on the team with his 46 assists and third in blocked shots (10). Nixon has hit double digits in scoring 14 times this season. #21-MARK DAWSON •Career-high 10 points vs. Pacific •Shooting .633 (31-49) from the field this season Dawson keeps improving with each game and is making great strides for the 49ers, giving the team a presence in the post. In the win at Fullerton he finished with five points, six rebounds, two blocks and a career-high three assists. He had a career-high 10 points and added five rebounds against Pacific on January 13. In the win over Cal Poly he had eight points and four rebounds and against UCSB he had five points and four boards. In Big West games Dawson is averaging 5.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting .667 (14-21) from the field. Overall he is averaging 3.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting .633 (31-49) from the field. In the win over Cornell he finished with eight points, two rebounds and a blocked shot. Dawson has scored eight points three times this season (Cal Poly, Cornell, Pepperdine). In the Pepperdine game he grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Dawson leads the team with 16 blocked shots this year, including three against San Francisco State. #20-KEVIN HOUSTON •Leads team with 58 assists •6 assists and 2 steals against UC Irvine Saturday against UC Irvine Kevin Houston had a season-high six assists with just one turnover. He also added four rebounds, four points and two steals. Houston leads the team with 58 assists (3.22 apg) and checks in at 9.7 points per game. He has hit double digits in scoring nine times this year, but just once in the last seven games. He had a season-high 17 points at Pepperdine and tallied 16 points against LMU and San Jose State. He has recorded at least one assist in each game this season and has eight games with four or more assists. Houston is one of three players with more assists (58) than turnovers (44) for the 49ers. He stepped up in overtime in the 49ers win at CS Fullerton. He scored six of his 11 points in overtime, including hitting four-of-four free throws in the 97-96 victory. In the win over Cornell, he had 12 points, five assists, four steals and just one turnover. He was six-of-six at the free throw line in the final 1:09 of the contest. In his last nine games he has 32 assists and just 15 turnovers. #2-LOUIS DARBY •Season-high 10 points against Cal Poly and CS Northridge •Averaging 7.5 points in last eight games Louis Darby is starting to find his rhythm for the 49ers. In the last eight games he is averaging 7.5 points per game. Against UC Irvine he had six points and in the win at UCR he had nine points and four rebounds in 17 minutes. He had a season-high tying 10 points in the win over CS Northridge and 10 points at Cal Poly on January 9, hitting five-of-seven shots from the field. In the last eight games he is shooting .553 (21-38) from the field. Darby is currently averaging 4.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per game overall, but in Big West game his scoring numbers jump to 7.6 points per outing. In the first nine games of the year (before not playing vs. Cornell), Darby had a total of 24 points. In the last eight games he has scored 60 points. #0-ONYE IBEKWE •Season-high 12 points and 7 rebounds in win over Cornell •8 points and 10 rebounds at UC Riverside Ibekwe had eight points and a season-high 10 rebounds in 22 minutes at UC Riverside on January 21. The double-digit rebounding game was his fifth as a 49er. He also had a big game against CS Northridge (1/15), finishing with six points and nine rebounds. Of his nine rebounds, four were on the offensive glass. He also was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. In the win over LMU he had nine points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Against Cornell he scored a season-high 12 points while grabbing seven boards. Ibekwe is currently averaging 4.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and is shooting .541 (20-37) from the field and .532 (25-47) at the free throw line. He has hit six consecutive free throws. #44-DOMINIQUE RICKS •12 points and 5 rebounds vs. CS Northridge •34 offensive rebounds Ricks had a big game against CS Northridge (1/15) finishing with 12 points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. Of his five boards, four were offensive and he hit six-of-seven shots from the field. The double-digit scoring effort was his second of the year. He scored a career-high 18 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds, at Sacramento State on December 5. Prior to the CSUN game, Ricks had scored just six points in his previous three games and grabbed just three rebounds. For the year he is averaging 4.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting .625 (35-56) from the field and .762 (16-21) at the free throw line. He had a big game at Cal earlier this season finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Of his 65 total rebounds this year (third-most on the squad), 34 have come on the offensive glass. #4-JAZZ HENDERSON •Career-high 23 points at Sacramento State •Fourth on team with 24 assists Henderson played some great defense against the Big West's leading scorer Mike Efevberha of CS Northridge on Jan. 15, helping limit him to just 10 points. Henderson played 12 minutes, finishing with two points, two rebounds and two assists. He had a big game at Sacramento State on December 5 where he scored a career-high 23 points, adding two rebounds and two assists in just 20 minutes of action. Henderson scored nine of the 49ers first 16 points of the second half, staking the 49ers to a 65-60 lead. He was 8-13 from the field and hit his first three-pointer of the season. In the win over UMBC he finished with seven points and a career-high four assists. Henderson is tied for fifth on the team with 24 assists and is averaging 4.5 points per game on the season while shooting .743 (26-35) at the free throw line. #15-STERLING BYRD •Career-high 13 points vs. SFSU •15-33 (.455) from three-point range Byrd played four minutes on Saturday against UCI and knocked down his one shot of the game, a three-pointer. Byrd did not play at CS Fullerton or UC Riverside, but played five minutes against Pacific (1/13) but registered two points, a steal and one offensive rebound. In the win over UC Davis he finished with six points and two rebounds. Byrd scored a season-high 13 points in the win over San Francisco State and followed that with 12 points in the win over LMU. He grabbed a season-high five rebounds in both games as well. Against LMU he was 4-4 from three-point range in the 93-85 triumph. Overall Byrd is averaging 3.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Byrd is shooting .455 (15-33) from three-point range this year. #11-ARTIS GANT •Career-high 10 points vs. SFSU •4-4 from 3-point range thus far Gant started against Cornell, finishing with two points and two assists in 12 minutes of action. He had his first double-digit scoring game as a collegian when he tallied 10 points against San Francisco State. Gant also added a career-best four assists in 19 minutes of action. Against LMU he did not score in 13 minutes, but finished with two assists and a steal while playing outstanding defense. In the opener at UNLV he had five points, one assist and one steal in 11 minutes. Gant is averaging 1.7 points and 0.83 assists per game is a perfect 4-4 from three-point range. #32-DOMINIC FREEMAN •Started three games this year (UNLV, Cal, Cornell) •5 points and 2 rebounds at UNLV Freeman, who had not played in the previous two games for the 49ers, started against Cornell (12/30). He played four minutes in the contest, garnering one offensive rebound. Freeman had three rebounds at Sacramento State in 11 minutes of action and is averaging 1.4 boards per game, along with 1.0 points per outing. His best game of the season was a three-point, three-rebound game vs. San Francisco State. In the UNLV game he had a strong opening game with five points, two rebounds and an assist in 10 minutes. At Cal he played just seven minutes, finishing with one rebound and one assist. He has not played in the last seven games. #35-ULRIC PATTILLO •3 points against UC Davis •Season-high 6 minutes of action vs. SFSU Pattillo has played in three games this season (UNLV, SFSU, UC Davis). He played two minutes against UC Davis and knocked down a three-pointer, his first of the season in three attempts. He played a season-high six minutes against San Francisco State finishing with two points, three rebounds and one assist. The three rebounds represents a career-high for him. Played two minutes at UNLV, taking one three-pointer and missing it. #24-BRICE GALLOW •Saw first action of season vs. SFSU Has played in three games (SFSU, Sacramento State, UC Davis). Played two minutes against UC Davis, grabbing one rebound. Was on the court for four minutes vs. San Francisco State and played 30 seconds at Sacramento State. Is yet to score or take a shot this season. Gallow is a walk-on out of Redondo Union High School. Gallow went through the fall "try-out" session and the coaches liked what they saw and offered him a spot on the team. His best statistical year as a prep came as a junior when he averaged 15 points and three assists per game. 2005-06 Season Results |
