49ers Breeze Past UCI, 79-50 LBSU Remains Perfect in BWC Play

LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games after its 79-50 win over UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon from the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers remained perfect in Big West play as well at 7-0, and improved to 11-1 at home this season. In fact LBSU is 22-3 over its last 25 home games dating back to Dec. 20, 2004.
The 49ers had two seven-game win streaks last season.
Crystal McCutcheon led the 49ers (14-5, 7-0) with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor (2-of-2 from three-point range). Jayme Connors added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, and Karina Figueroa posted 11 points and three assists. It is the seventh straight game that Figueroa has posted double-digits in scoring. Kelly Cochran paced UC Irvine (4-15, 2-5) with 14 points. Long Beach State out-scored UCI 50-22 in the paint and had a 16-2 advantage in fast break points.
The 49ers shot nearly 61 percent from the field (31-of-51), and held the Anteaters to just a 28 percent clip (18-of-64). The 49ers rank No. 1 in the Big West and No. 21 in the nation in field goal percentage defense.
Long Beach State held leads of 22, 28, and 31, and shot 66 percent in the second half.
LBSU jumped on UC Irvine early and built a five-point lead, 13-8, after a Figueroa jumper, and extended its lead to 11, 23-12 after another successful Figueroa jump shot at the 7:30 mark. The Beach kept its offensive onslaught in the stanza with an 18-11 run over a six minute span to take its biggest lead of the half, 18, at 41-23 with 1:09 left in the period. The 49ers shot a blistering 56 percent from the field (17-of-30) and out-rebounded UCI, 22-13. McCutcheon registered 14 points in the first half.
Long Beach State travels to UC Riverside on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
