49ers Beat Their Pro Alumni 9-2 LONG BEACH, CA-- Freshman Vance Worley was impressive against Long Beach State's professonal alumni, pitching to the minimum over the first four innings, allowing no hits, before leaving after five shutout innings with a win, by allowing just two hits. The current Dirtbags defeated their Pro Alumni 7-2 in an exhibition game. Evan Longoria went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Robert Perry added two hits and two runs at the top of the order. Scott Turmail pitched three no-hit, shutout innings in relief of Worley. Brett Andrade pitched the final one and two-thirds innings for the save. The current team took advantage some early wildness from loser Cesar Ramos, whose leadoff hit by pitch followed by a walk, came around to score on an infield error and a sacrifice fly to lead 2-0. The Beach tacked on a run in the second off an RBI single from Perry off of Marlins starter Jason Vargas to lead 3-0. The Pro Alumni tacked on two runs in the top of the 10th to close to 4-2. The current team tacked on five runs in the 11th off of Carlos Muniz. Angels farmhand Jered Weaver used just seven pitches to dispose of the current 49ers in order in the fifth and then played a few innings in right field, second, short and third throughout the rest of the contest. He even struck out against Brett Andrade in the 11th. With the vast amount of professonal pitching, which allowed for the 11-inning exhibition, but not many position players, the game saw a mid-game trade between current outfielders Allen Woods and Jose Hernandez, who each played for both teams. The Dirtbags open the season with USC for a three-game series starting on February 3, with Friday and Sunday's games at Blair Field and Saturday's game at Dedeaux Field. |
