LONG BEACH, CA-- Jon Grobe led four Pepperdine players in double figure kills with 16 as the No. 3-ranked Waves held on for a 30-25, 30-22, 26-30, 30-28 win over No. 1-ranked Long Beach State on Thursday night in front of 1,461 at the Walter Pyramid. Pepperdine, the defending national champions, improved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF while the 49ers fell to 7-1 and 3-1 in league action. The crowd of 1,461 was the 11th largest in men's volleyball history at LBSU.
Things looked as if they were going the 49ers way as they won game three and led 25-24 in game four, but the Waves came back to control the net at the end. The Waves went up 27-25 with a quick 3-0 run and pushed the advantage to 29-26 after a Paul Carroll kill. The 49ers fought back on back-to-back kills by Robert Tarr to cut the deficit to 29-28, but Pepperdine salted the match away as Grobe got the final kill of the night.
The Waves dominated games one and two rolling to 30-25, 30-22 wins. Trailing 24-21 in game one, Pepperdine went on a 6-0 run to take a 27-24 lead and eventually win 30-25. The Waves hit .345 in the game while the 49ers hit just .029 (12-11-34). Pepperdine totaled 5.5 team blocks in the game as Andy Hein and Grobe both had four kills. Game two was all Pepperdine at LBSU hit .107.
Game three saw the 49ers pick it up offensively. Long Beach hit .343 (18-6-35) in the game and Tarr pounded down nine of his match-high 28 kills in that game.
Tarr hit .288 on the evening after a slow start and Teddy Liles contributed 10 kills, but they were the only 49ers in double digits. Duncan Budinger finished with six kills, as did Paul Lotman. Tyler Caldwell had a career-high 12 digs and Tyler Hildebrand had 51 assists, eight digs and four block assists.
The Pepperdine offense was feuled by setter Jonathan Winder who finished with 56 assists, seven digs and five block assists. Hein added 15 kills and seven blocks, Carroll had 13 kills, as did John Parfitt. The Waves hit .286 on the evening and out-blocked the 49ers 16.0 to 10.5.
Long Beach will be in action on Friday night when they host USC at 7:30 pm in the Walter Pyramid. |
