49ers Open Season at New Mexico Indoor LONG BEACH, CA--Long Beach State track and field will open its indoor season by traveling to the University of New Mexico for the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational on Saturday, with the field events starting at 8:30 a.m. and the track events beginning at 10:30 a.m. The 49ers are jumping right into the proverbial fire, as a combined 11 top-25 teams and 34 nationally ranked athletes will compete in the meet. Five of those teams are ranked in the top-10, including the No. 5-ranked LSU, No. 7-ranked Arizona No. 10-ranked Florida State men and No. 8-ranked USC and No. 10-ranked California on the women's side. "This is one of the rewards for our athletes for having a great fall, to compete at a meet of this caliber. We are in the best physical shape I have seen us in at this point of the season, and though it is our first meet, we might see some school-records fall," said Head Coach Andy Sythe, who is entering his 17th year at the helm. "Our biggest concern is timing. We have not been involved in an actual competition environment, and we will have to make on the spot adjustments." Expected to highlight the 49er attack are two-time NCAA participant, John Temidara in the high jump and triple jump, 2005 NCAA Championship athlete Ronald Carter, in the triple and long jumps and state junior college decathlete Chris Richardson, who will compete in the long jump, 60-meter hurdles and shot put. On the women's side, indoor and outdoor conference qualifer Jill Reynolds will start her sophomore season in the pole vault, Charlene Deardorff will finish her final season in indoor competition with the 60 and 200 meter dashes, while heptathlete Jaime Cuthbert-Allen will compete in the 60m hurdles, long jump and high jump. |
