49ers Host First Place UC Irvine
THE RECORDS •Beach wins third straight road game •Face first place UC Irvine on Saturday Long Beach State is 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference. The 49ers won two road games last week, winning on Thursday night at CS Fullerton, 97-96 in overtime, and then on Saturday at UC Riverside, 82-70. The 49ers have won three consecutive games and three consecutive road games. UC Irvine, the hottest team in the league, is 10-8 overall and 6-0 in the Big West, riding a six-game win streak. The Anteaters were 2-0 last week winning at UCR (71-61) and at CSUF (67-59). THE COACH •Larry Reynolds in his fourth year at LBSU Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 30-71 (.297) in three-plus years as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 140-106 (.569) in his ninth year as a head coach. THE SERIES •49ers lead series with Anteaters, 44-26 The 49ers lead their series with UC Irvine by a 44-26 count. The two teams split their series last year. LBSU won 55-50 in the Walter Pyramid while UCI won 78-58 in the Bren Center. Long Beach has won the last two games against UCI at home and are 24-7 all-time against the Anteaters in Long Beach (8-3 in the Walter Pyramid). UCI has won five of the last seven meetings. UC IRVINE FACTS •Anteaters in first place in the Big West After a 4-8 start to the season, including five straight losses, UC Irvine has turned this around having won its last six games. UCI stands at 10-8 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the Big West. Last week UCI won at UC Riverside 71-61 and at CS Fullerton 67-59. Against CSF, Aaron Fitzgerald scored 28 points and Nic Campbell 15. UCI was 9-20 from three-point range and has just 11 turnovers. On the year, Ross Schraeder leads UCI at 13.7 points per game and is shooting 47-104 (.452) from three-point range. Fitzgerald is next at 12.8 points per game and he leads the Big West in assists averaging 6.1 per outing. Nic Campbell checks in at 12.1 points per game. UCI is averaging 72.7 points and shooting .483 from the field. Opponents are averaging 69.4 points per game and shooting .456. BLACK & BLUE RIVALRY SERIES •49ers lead 9-8 The Black and Blue Rivalry Series, presented by Duke's, will be on display this Saturday as both the men's and women's teams host UC Irvine at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers currently lead the series by a 9-8 count. The winner of head-to-head match-ups during BWC or MPSF play only in each sport will receive two points for each win. For sports that do not play a round-robin regular season, a higher finish in the BWC Tournament or Championships will determine two points. (M&W Cross Country, M&W Golf, M&W Track & Field). If round robin teams should meet in conference tournaments, an extra two points shall be rewarded. (Women's Soccer, Men's Volleyball, M&W Basketball, M&W Water Polo, Women's Tennis). And, an extra point will be given to the school for any road win. 49ERS AVERAGING 82.3 PPG •81.3 points per game in Big West play The 49er offense has put up some impressive numbers this year. The Beach is averaging a Big West-leading 82.3 points per game. In the latest NCAA stats (1/16), the 49ers ranked No. 14 in the nation in scoring. In Big West Conference outings the 49ers are averaging 81.3 points per game. Long Beach has scored 80 or more points nine times this season and have topped 70 points in 15 of their 17 games. Last year the 49ers averaged just 60.7 points per game. Long Beach scored a season-high 108 points when they defeated San Francisco State 108-51 on Nov. 27. LONG RANGE SHOOTING •8.59 made three's per game •School record 14 made three's at Fullerton The 49ers are shooting .366 (146-399) from three-point range this season, averaging 8.59 made three's per game. In the latest NCAA stats (1/16), the 49ers ranked No. 25 in the country in three-pointers made per game. In last Thursday's win at CS Fullerton the 49ers were 14-34 (.412) from long-range. The 14 made three's breaks the school record and the 34 attempts is the second-most in school history. Earlier this season at Portland the 49ers tied the school record by hitting 13 treys (13-21, .619). The 49ers have hit double digits in made three's in eight of their 17 games. Long Beach is creeping up on the school-record for made three's which is 200 set in the 1992-93 campaign. Currently, the 49ers have connected on 146 three's this year. BALANCED SCORING •Five players in double digits Averaging 82.3 points per game overall, the 49ers have five players who are averaging in double digits. Jibril Hodges (13.8), Aaron Nixon (13.1), Shawn Hawkins (11.8), Kejuan Johnson (11.6) and Kevin Houston (10.1) are all above the magical double digit line this season. STRONG FIRST HALVES •Beach led CSUN at the half by 18 points Before the 49ers took on CS Northridge on January 15, in its previous seven games, the 49ers out-scored five of its opponents in the second half after a not-so-great first half. That has flipped in the past three games (CS Northridge, CS Fullerton, UC Riverside). The 49ers have had big first halves in those three games, heading into the lockerroom with a lead each time. In the last three outings the 49ers are out-scoring their opponents 131-105 (43.7-35.0) in the first half. In the 84-73 win over CS Northridge the 49ers played one of its best first halves of the season. Long Beach led CSUN 49-31, shooting .500 (17-34) from the field, .545 (6-11) from three-point range and 1.000 (9-9) at the free throw line. Thursday at Fullerton the 49ers led 43-39 at the half and Saturday at UCR the 49ers held a 39-35 advantage. The 49ers have led at the half just eight times this season (6-2 record). In its previous seven outings (prior to CSUN game) the 49ers were averaging just 31.1 points per first half and shooting .388 (80-206) from the field. PERFECT AT THE LINE •49ers a perfect 13-13 at the charity stripe at Fullerton The 49ers have been up and down this year at the free throw line. Heading into Thursday's game at CS Fullerton the 49ers were shooting .693 at the line in Big West games. Thanks to a 13-13 (1.000) performance against the Titans the 49ers are now shooting .733 (74-101). In the win over CS Northridge the 49ers were 25-30 (.833), including a 9-9 performance in the first half and a 9-10 showing in the final 1:09 of the contest. Saturday at UC Riverside the 49ers were 13-19 (.684). In its last three games the 49ers are 51-62 (.823) at the charity stripe. Overall this year the 49ers are shooting .692 (287-415) from the line. SEASON LOW 11 TURNOVERS •14 assists, 11 turnovers vs. Pacific •Back-to-back games with more assists than turnovers For the first time this year the 49ers recorded back-to-back games with more assists than turnovers. Despite losing to Pacific, the 49ers had a season-low 11 turnovers, compared to 14 assists. In the win over CSUN, LBSU had 15 assists and 14 turnovers. Thursday at CS Fullerton the 49ers had 14 assists and 14 turnovers. Six times this year the 49ers have registered more assists than turnovers. The previous low for turnovers this season was 12, against both UMBC and UC Davis. FORCING TURNOVERS •Opponents averaging 17.1 per outing 49er opponents are averaging more turnovers per game (17.1) this season than the 49ers (16.2). In the last eight games, opponents have had more turnovers than assists five times. Last Sunday, CS Northridge had 10 assists compared to 21 turnovers. Thursday at Fullerton the Titans had 22 turnovers and 20 assists and on Saturday at UC Riverside the Highlanders had 18 turnovers and just 10 assists. In the first nine games of the year 49er opponents had more assists than turnovers seven times. Through five Big West Conference games the 49ers are forcing 18.8 turnovers per game. LAST SEASON IN JANUARY •Beach 5-2 in January this year Last year at this time (January 23), the 49ers were 2-15 overall and finished the month on January with a 1-7 mark. This year the 49ers are 5-2 in the month of January and 9-8 overall. The 49ers didn't reach win number nine last year until March 3, a 71-52 home win over Cal Poly. Dating back to February 10 of 2005, the 49ers are 16-10. LAST YEAR vs. THE ANTEATERS •49ers split with the UC Irvine The two teams split their series last season with each winning on its home court. UC Irvine won 78-58 at the Bren Center on January 20. Jeff Gloger led four UCI players in double digits with 20 points. Aaron Fitzgerald had 13 points and 11 assists and Adam Metelski had 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Jibril Hodges led the 49ers with 16 points. UCI shot .554 (31-56) from the field, the 49ers .309 (17-55). In the return game on February 17 in Long Beach, Hodges scored 15 points and Shawn Hawkins added 12 points and eight boards as the 49ers won 55-50. UCI shot just .392 (20-51) from the field and 1-11 from three-point range. Greg Ethington led UCI with 17 points and eight boards. ON THE ROAD •Beach 3-6 away from Walter Pyramid The 49ers have had their problems on the road, but are riding a three-game winning streak after winning at Cal Poly (79-66) on January 9, at CS Fullerton (97-96, ot) on Thursday and at UC Riverside (82-70) on Saturday. Overall the 49ers are 3-6 away from the Walter Pyramid this season. Last year the 49ers were 2-15 on the road (1-13 true road games, 1-2 at neutral sites). Over the past three-plus years the 49ers are just 6-48 away from home (5-45 true road games, 1-3 at neutral sites). The last time the 49ers won three true road games in a row was in the 2001-02 season when they won four in a row (Jan. 31-Feb. 16) away from the Walter Pyramid. HODGES ON CAREER CHARTS •15th 49er to eclipse 1,000 career points (1,053) •Breaks school record for three-pointers made It came just 24 seconds into the January 13th game against Pacific. Jibril Hodges hit his first shot of the game giving him 1,000 career points. He is just the 15th player in school history to surpass that plateau, and he joins his father, Craig, on that short list. The elder Hodges ranks No. 5 all-time with 1,476 points. Jibril currently stands at No. 13 all-time with 1,053 points. Saturday at UC Riverside (1/21) he broke the school record for career three-pointers, hitting his first of the night. Hodges stands alone in first place on the 49er career chart in three-pointers made (213) and he is second on three-pointers attempted (569). His next milestone will be to move into the top 10 in the Big West Conference for career three-pointers. Holding down the No. 10 spot is Ben Larson of Cal Poly and Mark Hull of UCSB with 217 made three's. #1-JIBRIL HODGES •Leads team in scoring at 13.9 ppg •Three games with five made three-pointers this season Hodges broke loose with a season-high 23 points on Thursday at CS Fullerton, including hitting a three-pointer with less than three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Hodges was five-of-10 from long-range in that contest. He leads the 49ers in scoring at 13.9 points per game and has hit in double digits 12 times this season. In the win over CS Northridge he had for 19 points, 14 in the first six minutes of the game. In his last three outings Hodges is shooting 11-24 (.458) from three-point range. Overall this year Hodges is shooting .393 (48-122) from three-point range. He came off the bench against UMBC (12/22) to score 20 points, hitting four-of-seven shots from three-point range in his 25 minutes of action. Hodges has hit at least one three-pointer in each game this season, knocking down a season-high five three's (5-11) at Sacramento State, at UCSB (5-13) and at CS Fullerton (5-10). With 48 made three's already this season, Hodges ranks No. 14 on the single season chart. Last year he knocked down 74 (74-197) treys, good for the No. 2 single season mark all-time at LBSU. He holds three of the top 14 single season three-point marks in school history. #3-SHAWN HAWKINS •18 points and 9 rebounds at CS Fullerton •Career-high tying 24 points vs. UC Davis Hawkins hit the game-winning three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in the game to lift the 49ers to the win at CS Fullerton. He finished with 18 points and five rebounds, hitting four-of-eight shots from three-point range. Saturday at UC Riverside he had 10 points, five rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots. Hawkins is averaging 11.8 points per game overall. He is the 49ers leading rebounder at 6.2 boards per game and is shooting 25-66 (.379) from three-point range. He picked up his second double-double of the year at Cal Poly (1/9) finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the 49ers win. His first double-double came against UC Davis (1/2) finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The 24 points ties his career-high which he set last year at Cal Poly. Hawkins was 9-of-11 from the field against the Aggies and three-of-four from three-point range. He had a stellar game in the win over UMBC, finishing with 17 points and four rebounds. Hawkins was 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range. He has hit double digits in scoring 11 times this year. Against LMU he finished with 19 points and eight rebounds in the 49ers home win over the Lions. #30-KEJUAN JOHNSON •Career-high 18 points at UC Riverside •11 points, career-high 7 assists at Fullerton Johnson continues to display a strong all-around game for the 49ers. Thursday night at Fullerton he had 11 points, six rebounds and a career-high seven assists in 34 minutes of action. In the win at UC Riverside he had a career-high 18 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. In his last five games Johnson is averaging 13.2 points and 3.8 assists per game. At Cal Poly (1/9) he finished with 14 points, three steals and a career-high eight rebounds. He scored 10 of the 49ers first 12 points to start the second half and help rally LBSU from a nine-point deficit. Overall, Johnson is averaging 11.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting .494 (41-83) from the field. In Big West Conference games Johnson is averaging 12.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per outing. He has scored in double figures in seven of his 10 games. He is one of three players (along with Hodges and Houston) who have more assists (32) than turnovers (28). Johnson became eligible on December 13 after his appeal to the NCAA to grant eligibility came through. #55-AARON NIXON •Career-high 22 points vs. CS Northridge •Six straight games in double figures Nixon has scored in double figures in his last six games and is averaging 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this year for the 49ers. Saturday at UC Riverside he had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists and in Thursday's win at CS Fullerton he finished with 16 points and three rebounds. Against Pacific he scored a team-high 17 points, adding four assists and three rebounds. In the victory over CS Northridge he scored a career-high 22 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. In his last six games Nixon is averaging 16.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He is second on the team with his 43 assists and third in blocked shots (10) and steals (16). Nixon has hit double digits in scoring 14 times this season. #21-MARK DAWSON •Career-high 10 points vs. Pacific •Shooting .646 (31-48) from the field this season Dawson keeps improving with each game and is making great strides for the 49ers, giving the team a presence in the post. Thursday at Fullerton he finished with five points, six rebounds, two blocks and a career-high three assists. He had a career-high 10 points and added five rebounds against Pacific on January 13. In the win over Cal Poly he had eight points and four rebounds and against UCSB he had five points and four boards. In Big West games Dawson is averaging 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting .700 (14-20) from the field. He had connected on 11 consecutive field goal attempts before missing his first shot on Sunday vs. CS Northridge. Overall he is averaging 4.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting .646 (31-48) from the field. In the win over Cornell he finished with eight points, two rebounds and a blocked shot. Dawson has scored eight points three times this season (Cal Poly, Cornell, Pepperdine). In the Pepperdine game he grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Dawson leads the team with 16 blocked shots this year, including three against San Francisco State. #20-KEVIN HOUSTON •Leads team with 52 assists •11 points in win at CS Fullerton Houston stepped up in overtime on Thursday night in the 49ers win at CS Fullerton. He scored six of his 11 points in overtime, including hitting four-of-four free throws in the 97-96 victory. The double digit scoring effort was his first in five games. Saturday at UC Riverside he tallied nine points and grabbed four rebounds in the victory. Houston leads the 49ers with 52 assists (3.1 apg) and has committed 43 turnovers. He is averaging 10.1 points per game and shooting .504 (59-117) from the field. In the win over Cornell, he had 12 points, five assists, four steals and just one turnover. He was six-of-six at the free throw line in the final 1:09 of the contest. In his last eight games he has 26 assists and just 14 turnovers. Houston, who has scored in double figures in nine of the 17 games, tallied a season-high 17 points at Pepperdine, adding two assists and two rebounds. He was three-of-four from three-point range in the contest as well. Houston had 16 points and four rebounds against San Jose State and 16 points and three assists in the win over Loyola Marymount. #2-LOUIS DARBY •Season-high 10 points against Cal Poly and CS Northridge •Averaging 7.7 points in last seven games Louis Darby is starting to find his rhythm for the 49ers. In the last seven games he is averaging 7.7 points per game. Saturday at UCR he had nine points and four rebounds in 17 minutes. Thursday at Fullerton he had seven points in 10 minutes of action. He had a season-high tying 10 points in the win over CS Northridge and 10 points at Cal Poly on January 9, hitting five-of-seven shots from the field. In the last seven games he is shooting .576 (19-33) from the field. Darby is currently averaging 4.9 points and 1.6 rebounds per game overall, but in Big West game his scoring numbers jump to 7.8 points per outing. In the first nine games of the year (before not playing vs. Cornell), Darby had a total of 24 points. In the last seven games he has scored 54 points. #0-ONYE IBEKWE •Season-high 12 points and 7 rebounds in win over Cornell •8 points and 10 rebounds at UC Riverside Ibekwe had eight points and a season-high 10 rebounds in 22 minutes at UC Riverside on Saturday. The double-digit rebounding game was his fifth as a 49er. He also had a big game against CS Northridge (1/15), finishing with six points and nine rebounds. Of his nine rebounds, four were on the offensive glass. He also was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. In the win over LMU he had nine points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Against Cornell he scored a season-high 12 points while grabbing seven boards. Ibekwe is currently averaging 4.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and is shooting .541 (20-37) from the field and .532 (25-47) at the free throw line. He has hit six consecutive free throws. #44-DOMINIQUE RICKS •12 points and 5 rebounds vs. CS Northridge •34 offensive rebounds Ricks had a big game against CS Northridge finishing with 12 points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. Of his five boards, four were offensive and he hit six-of-seven shots from the field. The double-digit scoring effort was his second of the year. He scored a career-high 18 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds, at Sacramento State on December 5. Prior to the CSUN game, Ricks had scored just six points in his previous three games and grabbed just three rebounds. For the year he is averaging 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting .630 (34-54) from the field and .762 (16-21) at the free throw line. He had a big game at Cal earlier this season finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Of his 65 total rebounds this year (third-most on the squad), 34 have come on the offensive glass. #4-JAZZ HENDERSON
