49ers Win At UC Riverside, 82-70
RIVERSIDE, CA—Kejuan Johnson scored a career-high 18 points and Aaron Nixon added 15 to lead Long Beach State to a 82-70 win at UC Riverside on Saturday night at the Student Rec Center. The win, the third in a row on the road for the 49ers, improved their record to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference. UCR fell to 2-15 overall and 2-5 in league play. Dedrick Bates led the Highlanders with a career-high 21 points. The 49ers led 59-55 at the 10:08 mark, but turned up its defensive pressure. Long Beach went on a 12-5 run to take a 71-58 lead at 4:28 after a Nixon bucket. Onye Ibekwe made his presence known in the second half as he scored six of his eight points in the second half. Ibekwe also finished with 10 rebounds. At one point in the half, UCR hit just one-of-14 shots from the field. Nixon scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half. The 49ers shot .516 (32-62) from the field for the game and an impressive 18-31 (.581) in the second half. The 49er defense limited UCR to a .333 (23-69) field goal percentage in the contest while forcing 18 turnovers. The 49ers also out-rebounded the Highlanders 45 to 38 as Ibekwe led the way with 10 boards and Nixon and Johnson contributed six each. Nixon also dished out four assists. The 49ers led 39-35 at the half as Johnson keyed the 49er offense with 14 points. The 49ers hit five three-pointers in the half, with Hodges and Johnson both knocking down two. UC Riverside stayed in the game by forcing 10 49er turnovers and hitting eight-of-nine shots from the free throw line. Bates scored 13 first half points for UCR. Trailing 33-32 with 3:27 left in the half, the 49ers closed out the half with a 7-2 run. Long Beach jumped to an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game as Louis Darby scored the first five points of the game and Hodges knocked down a three-pointer. That three gave him the school record in three-pointers made with 212, surpassing Lucious Harris. He finished the evening with eight points and five rebounds. Darby and Houston both added nine points. The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, January 28 when they host first place UC Irvine at 5:05 pm in the Walter Pyramid. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
