Hughes Named to Clemens Award Watch List HOUSTON, TX--Long Beach State righthander Jared Hughes (Laguna Beach) is on the intial watch list for the Roger Clemens National Collegiate Pitcher of the Year Award, given for the first time two years ago to former Dirtbag Jered Weaver. Hughes, entering his junior season, was projected by Baseball America as the Big West's Pitcher of the Year, joining teammates infielder Evan Longoria (Player) and righthander Vance Worley (Freshman) on the publication's projections. Hughes, a third team pre-season All-American, is rated as the 15th-best junior in the country and in September was projected as a supplemental or early second round pick in the 2006 draft. Hughes went 7-0 in the Cape Cod League this past summer after going 8-3 with a 2.83 ERA in his first season at LBSU as the team's Sunday starter. The Dirtbags, ranked as high as No. 16 by Collegiate Baseball in the pre-season, host their annual Leadoff Weekend starting on January 26 when the Leadoff Dinner with keynote speaker Mike Gallo, followed by the golf tournament on Friday and the two alumni games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
