49ers Close Out Pre-Season with Third in a Row
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (5-6) finished off its pre-season schedule by winning its third straight, routing visiting UC Davis (3-9) 77-48 on Monday evening. Shawn Hawkins tied his career-high with 24 points and fell one rebound short of a career high, with 11, shooting 9-of-11 from the field. Jibril Hodges had 12 points and Kevin Houston added 10 points. The 49er defense, which held an opponent under 50 for the first time this season, held the Aggies to just 33 percent for the game, while LBSU shot 50 percent for the game. The Beach shot a blistering 65 percent in the second half. Vince Oliver led UC Davis with 14 points. "I thought our guys did a great job", said Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "They had a lot of intensity, especially in the first half. It didn't allow Davis to get into a rhythm offensively and I think that caused them a lot of problems. We went out and dominated the boards in the second half. I think Shawn Hawkins did a great job on that, getting us a couple of rebounds. I thought Shawn played within himself. There was nothing rushed and nothing hurried. Everything he got was kind of open. That's what we want Shawn to do." A Hodges three made it 47-30 with 11:24 left as the basket capped a 19-10 to open the half. Hodges' three, moments earlier, made it 43-28 with 13:00 left. A Hawkins layup made it 34-22 with 17:18 left, forcing a UCD timeout to open the second half. The Beach led 28-20 at the half, as both teams shot 32 percent. The 49ers took the lead, converting 8-of-14 free throws, while the Aggies did not take a free throw attempt. Back-to-back three-pointers put the 49ers up 10-4 early with 13:55 left. The 49ers allowed just three UCD field goals over the first 12:10, leading 15-6 into the under-8:00 timeout. The 49ers open up Big West play this weekend when they travel to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday for a contest at 2 p.m., and then to Cal Poly on Monday, January 9 for a contest at 7 p.m. The Sixth Man Boosters will have a Champagne Express Bus to the game at UCSB.
