Hawkins' 3 Lifts 49ers To Win At CSUF
FULLERTON, CA—Shawn Hawkins' three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left on the clock lifted Long Beach State to a 97-96 overtime win at Cal State Fullerton. Hawkins finished with 18 points and nine rebounds for the 49ers (8-8, 3-2 Big West), while fellow senior Jibril Hodges had 23 points. Jamaal Brown led Fullerton (9-6, 3-3) with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Down 90-85 with 3:00 left in overtime, the 49ers got their offense in gear. Two free throws by Kevin Houston pulled LBSU to 90-87 at 2:46. On its next possession, Hodges knocked down a three to tie the game 90-90. Fullerton pulled back on top 93-90 on a three by Jermaine Harper, who finished with 22 points. Two more free throws by Houston cut the deficit to 93-92. Houston then gave the 49ers the lead 94-93 on a short jumper. Trailing 95-94, the 49ers got the ball into Hawkins' hands who banked in the three giving LBSU a 97-95 lead. On the ensuing play the 49ers called a timeout, but they didn't have any, resulting in a technical foul. Bobby Brown went to the line, missing the first and hitting the second, cutting the margin to 97-96. A long three-pointer from halfcourt by Brown at the buzzer missed. The 49ers hit a school-record 14 three-pointers in the game, as Hodges had five. He tied Lucious Harris on the 49er career three-point chart with 211 made three's. The 49ers also forced 22 Titan turnovers and were a perfect 13-13 at the free throw line. Aaron Nixon added 16 points for the 49ers while Johnson and Houston both had 11. The 49ers fought back to tie the game and send it to overtime with a three-pointer by Hodges with three seconds left on the clock. After Jamaal Brown hit one of two free throws with 12.4 second left the 49ers came down court. Louis Darby took a three, but missed, but Kejuan Johnson was there to grab the rebound and find an open Hodges on the right wing. Long Beach jumped to a quick lead to start the game taking a 27-13 advantage at the 10:24 mark. That lead slowly dissapated as the Titans started getting hot behind Brown and Brown. Fullerton pulled to within 40-39 after two free throws by Bobby Brown with 1:21 left in the half. The free throws were courtesy of a technical foul on the 49ers Hawkins. But, Hodges nailed a long three-pointer with 30 seconds left to send the 49ers into the lockerroom with a 43-39 advantage. Long Beach shot .474 (18-38) from the field and 6-15 (.400) from three-point range. The Titans, who got 13 points from Jamaal Brown and 12 from Bobby Brown in the half, shot .531 (17-32) in the initial half but were the victim of 11 turnovers. The 49ers will be on the road on Saturday when they play at UC Riverside at 5 pm. The game will be televised live on FOX Sports West 2. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
