Baseball Picked Second in the Big West

Dirtbags Picked Second in the Big West IRVINE, CA-- The ping of the bat, the bloom of the flowers on the trees around campus and Long Beach State baseball being picked to finished second in the Big West Conference. All rites of spring if you are the Dirtbags, who have appeared in 15 NCAA Regionals since 1989, and hosted three straight playoff series. With just 23 days left until opening day, Long Beach State is picked to finished second, according to the conference's eight coaches, to arch rival CS Fullerton, who received 63 total points and seven first place votes. LBSU received 53 points, followed by UC Irvine (42 votes), Cal Poly (41) and UC Riverside (35). The Mustangs received the other first place vote. Pacific (26), UC Santa Barbara (20) and CS Northridge (8) round out the field. Space for the annual Leadoff Dinner is filling up fast, on January 26, with keynote speaker Houston reliever Mike Gallo. Reservations are also being taken for the alumni golf tournament on January 27 and the alumni game and barbeque on January 28 at Blair Field. The home opener is February 3 against USC, as part of the nation's toughest non-conference schedule. LBSU is ranked No. 16 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 22 in Baseball America in their pre-season national polls. The Walter Pyramid will also be the host to the fourth annual Southern California Baseball Media Day on January 18, broadcast live on CSTV and CSTV.com, starting at 10 a.m. BIG WEST COACHES POLL |
