THE RECORDS •Beach wins at Cal Poly on Monday Long Beach State is 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big West Conference after splitting its opening road trip last week. The 49ers lost at UCSB 77-74 and then won at Cal Poly 79-66. The road win snapped a seven-game road losing skid. The 49ers are home this weekend hosting Pacific on Friday and Cal State Northridge on Sunday. Pacific is 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the league, while CS Northridge is 6-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.
THE COACH •Larry Reynolds in his fourth year at LBSU Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 27-70 (.278) in three years as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 137-105 (.566) in his ninth year as a head coach.
THE SERIES •Beach leads series with Pacific, 46-29 •49ers lead series with CS Northridge, 22-16 The 49ers lead in their series with Pacific by a 46-29 count but the Tigers have won the last four meetings, and five of the last six. Last year the Tigers swept the 49ers winning 87-58 in Stockton and 68-60 in Long Beach. The last 49er win came on February 19, 2003 in Long Beach, a 70-61 triumph. Larry Reynolds is 1-5 against Pacific. All-time the 49ers are 28-7 vs. Pacific in long Beach, but they have dropped the last two meetings at home. The 49ers lead their series with CS Northridge 22-16, but the Matadors have dominated recently winning the last six games and nine of the last 10. Long Beach has lost five games in a row to CSUN at the Walter Pyramid. Last year CSUN won 68-66 in Northridge and 69-53 in Long Beach.
PACIFIC FACTS •Tigers suffer startling setback to UC Riverside Pacific is 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the Big West, but the big news is the loss in league play. Last Saturday Pacific fell at home to UC Riverside 83-71. The Highlanders out-scored Pacific 44-31 in the second half. Monday the Tigers rebounded with an 83-74 win over CS Fullerton. In that game Christian Maraker had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Johnny Gray added 21 points and seven assists. On the year Maraker is averaging 18.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting .487 from the field. Gray is the only other Tiger in double digits at 14.7 points per game. He is UOP's best long-range shooter having hit .493 (36-73) of his three's this season. Guard Mike Webb is third in scoring at 9.1 points per game. Pacific is averaging 76.7 points per game and shooting .494 from the field. Tiger opponents are averaging 65.6 points per game and are shooting .411 from the field.
NORTHRIDGE FACTS •Matadors open 1-1 in Big West play CS Northridge is 6-6 overall and 1-1 in league play as well as last week they lost to CS Fullerton 83-78 and defeated UC Riverside 76-62. In the win over the Highlanders, guard Mike Efevberha had 16 points and three others tallied 12 points. CSUN limited UCR to a .333 (18-54) field goal percentage. On the year, Efevberha is averaging a Big West-leading 21.7 points per game. He is 32-77 (.416) from three-point range and is a top free throw shooter as well knocking down .816 (62-76) of his charity tosses. Calvin Chitwood is second at 12.3 points per game and is also pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game. Jonathan Heard is averaging 10.6 points per outing. As a team CSUN is averaging 75.8 points per game and shooting .424 from the field. Matador opponents are averaging 74.1 points and shooting .454.
OFFENSE PUTTING UP NUMBERS •49ers averaging 81.8 points per game The 49er offense has been running on all cylinders, averaging 81.8 points per game, tops in the Big West Conference. The 49ers have scored 80 or more points in six times this season and have topped 70 or more points in 11 of their 13 games. Last year the 49ers averaged just 60.7 points per outing (+21.1). Long Beach scored a season-high 108 points when they defeated San Francisco State 108-51 on November 27. The 108 points was the most since The Beach put up 127 points on December 22, 1999 in a 127-57 rout of CS Monterey Bay.
FIRING FROM LONG RANGE •12 made three-pointers against UMBC The 49ers are shooting .379 (113-298) from three-point range this season, averaging 8.69 made three's per game. In the win over UMBC the 49ers were 12-28 (.429) from long-range. Against UC Davis the 49ers connected on 10 of 19 treys. Last Saturday at UCSB the 49ers hit 11 treys in 33 attempts. The 33 attempts was the second-highest single game total in 49er history (35 is the record). The school record for made three's in a game is 13, set earlier this season at Portland. The 49ers have hit double digits in made three's in seven of their 13 games. December 3 at Portland the 49ers were 13-21 (.619) from long-range, a season-high for makes and percentage. Long Beach is creeping up on the school-record for made three's which is 200 set in the 1992-93 campaign. Last year the 49ers shot just .318 (159-500) from long-range, averaging 5.3 made three's per outing.
FREE THROW SHOOTING •Beach shooting .674 at the line The 49ers have been up and down at the free throw line this season. In the win over Cornell they shot a season-high .840 (21-25) at the charity stripe, including a perfect 8-8 in the final 1:22 of the contest. In the win over UC Davis they shot a season-low .542 (13-24). Overall The Beach stands at .674 at the charity stripe. In its last three games the 49ers are shooting just .606 (40-66) at the free throw line. Jibril Hodges stands at .871 (27-31) to lead the team and he had knocked down 21 consecutive free throw attempts before missing one at Cal Poly.
BALANCED SCORING •Five players in double digits Averaging 81.8 points per game overall, the 49ers have five players who are averaging in double digits. Jibril Hodges (13.8), Shawn Hawkins (12.5), Aaron Nixon (11.8), Kevin Houston (11.0), and Kejuan Johnson (10.7) are all above the magical double digit line this season.
RE-START THE STREAK •49ers are 5-1 at home After having an eight-game home winning streak snapped on December 10 vs. San Jose State, the 49ers re-started with an 81-70 home win over Maryland-Baltimore County on December 22 and have now won their last three home outings. The 49ers have seven more home games this season. Last year the 49ers went 8-5 at home, winning their final six contests in the Walter Pyramid.
DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT •Season-low 48 points by UC Davis The 49ers have picked up the pace defensively in their last four games. In its last four games opponents are averaging just 64.0 points per game. Opponents have shot just .413 (90-218) in those four outings as well. On December 30 the 49ers held Cornell to a then season-low 65 points. The Beach then came back against UC Davis to limit the Aggies to 48 points. Overall the 49ers are allowing 78.8 points per game.
STRONG SECOND HALVES •Beach has out-scored five of last six opponents in second half In its last six games, the 49ers have out-scored five of its opponents in the second half. In those six outings the 49ers are averaging 48.8 points per game and shooting .572 (99-173) from the field. Opponents are averaging 36.0 points in the second half and shooting just .429 (76-177). In the first half in the last six outings, Long Beach is averaging 30.5 points and shooting .382 (66-173). Opponents in the last six games are averaging 33.7 points and shooting .452 (76-168) in the first half. The 49ers are out-scoring opponents by 12.8 points in the second half while shooting .572 in the half compared to the opponents .429, a difference of +.143.
LAST YEAR vs. PACIFIC •Tigers win both games Pacific won both games last year, winning 68-60 in Long Beach and 87-58 in Stockton. In Long Beach, David Doubley had 15 points and Christian Maraker 12 points and nine boards in the victory. The Tigers shot .532 (25-47) from the field in the game. Chris Jenkins led the 49ers with 15 points and Jibril Hodges added 11. In Stockton, the Tigers shot a blistering .660 (33-50) from the field and 8-13 from three-point range. Guillaume Yango had 20 points and Jasko Korajkic 14. Hodges and Onye Ibekwe both had 12 points for the 49ers.
LAST YEAR vs. NORTHRIDGE •49ers drop both to CSUN Cal State Northridge swept the 49ers last year winning 69-53 in Long Beach and 68-66 in Northridge. In the Walter Pyramid, Davin White scored 28 points and Ian Boylan 19 to lead CSUN to the win. Jibril Hodges had 14 points for the 49ers and Onye Ibekwe had 11 points and 10 rebounds. At CSUN, Hodges had 24 points, hitting six-of-11 three's, but CSUN held on for the two-point win. Ibekwe added 12 points and seven boards as the 49ers shot .529 (27-51) from the field. Boylan led the Matadors with 19 points and six steals.
#1-JIBRIL HODGES •Closing in on 1,000 career points (998) •Season-high 20 points vs. Maryland-Baltimore County Had 19 points in the loss at UCSB, hitting five three-pointers in the game. Was held to just nine points at Cal Poly, just the third time in 13 games he hasn't hit double digits in points. Leads the 49ers in scoring at 13.8 points per game. Shooting .387 (36-93) from three-point range. He came off the bench against UMBC to score a season-high 20 points, hitting four-of-seven shots from three-point range in his 25 minutes of action. Hodges has hit at least one three-pointer in each game this season, knocking down a season-high five three's (5-11) at Sacramento State and at UCSB (5-13). In his last nine games he is shooting .453 (29-64) from three-point range and that includes a one-for-seven performance against San Jose State. He is closing in on breaking the 1,000-point barrier as a 49er as he currently stands at 998. With two more points he will become the 15th player in 49er history to score 1,000 points. And, he will join his father on that coveted list as Craig Hodges ranks No. 5 all-time with 1,476 points. Hodges is currently second on the 49er career chart in three-pointers made (201) and three-pointers attempted (540). He needs just 11 more three's to pass Lucious Harris' (1989-93) career mark of 211 made three's.
#3-SHAWN HAWKINS •Career-high tying 24 points vs. UC Davis •17.0 points per game in last three games Hawkins has stepped up his game for the 49ers. Second on the team in scoring (12.5) and first in rebounding (6.2), Hawkins picked up his second double-double of the year on Monday at Cal Poly. He finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the 49ers win. His first double-double came three games ago against UC Davis finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The 24 points ties his career-high which he set last year at Cal Poly. Hawkins was 9-of-11 from the field against the Aggies and three-of-four from three-point range. In the last three games Hawkins is averaging 17.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. He had a stellar game in the win over UMBC, finishing with 17 points and four rebounds. Hawkins was 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range. He has hit double digits in scoring nine times this year, tallying 19 points against both LMU and Portland. At Portland he also added six rebounds, five assists and two steals and was 4-5 from three-point range. Against LMU he finished with 19 points and eight rebounds in the 49ers home win over the Lions.
#30-KEJUAN JOHNSON •NCAA grants appeal on December 13 •14 points, 8 rebounds at Cal Poly Johnson continues to display a strong all-around game for the 49ers. Monday at Cal Poly he finished with 14 points, three steals and a career-high eight rebounds. He scored 10 of the 49ers first 12 points to start the second half and help rally LBSU from a nine-point deficit. Johnson is averaging 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting .488 (21-43) from the field and .526 (10-19) from three-point range. In the win over Cornell he had 11 points, two assists and three steals. He had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win over UMBC and scored 17 points in his first game at Pepperdine. Johnson became eligible on December 13 after his appeal to the NCAA to grant eligibility came through.
#55-AARON NIXON •15 points and 4 assists in win at Cal Poly •Season-high 18 points at Sacramento State Nixon took over in the second half at Cal Poly to help lead the 49ers to victory. He scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half to rally the 49ers from a nine-point deficit. He was five-of-six at the free throw line and converted three three-point plays in the second half alone. In the loss at UCSB he had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Nixon is averaging 11.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this season. He is second on the team with his 32 assists. Nixon has hit double digits in scoring 10 times this season, including a season-high 18 points at Sacramento State. In the win over LMU he had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
#4-JAZZ HENDERSON •Career-high 23 points at Sacramento State •Third on team with 20 assists Henderson had a big game at Sacramento State on December 5 where he scored a career-high 23 points, adding two rebounds and two assists in just 20 minutes of action. Henderson scored nine of the 49ers first 16 points of the second half, staking the 49ers to a 65-60 lead. He was 8-13 from the field and hit his first three-pointer of the season. In his last three games he has scored just two points, but he dished out four assists in the win over UC Davis and is third on the team with 20 assists. In the win over UMBC he finished with seven points and a career-high four assists. Henderson stands at 5.7 points per game and is shooting .733 (22-30) at the free throw line.
#20-KEVIN HOUSTON •Leads team with 42 assists •8 points, 5 assists and 3 steals in win at Cal Poly Houston had a strong all-around game in the 49ers win at Cal Poly on Monday. He finished with eight points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks shots in 31 minutes. He also had just one turnover in the game. Houston leads the 49ers with 42 assists (3.23 apg) and has committed just 35 turnovers. He is averaging 11.0 points per game and shooting .538 (50-93) from the field and .414 (12-29) from three-point range. In the win over Cornell, he had 12 points, five assists, four steals and just one turnover. He was six-of-six at the free throw line in the final 1:09 of the contest. In his last four games he has 16 assists and just six turnovers. Houston, who has scored in double figures in eight of the 13 games, tallied a season-high 17 points at Pepperdine, adding two assists and two rebounds. He was three-of-four from three-point range in the contest as well. Houston had 16 points and four rebounds against San Jose State and 16 points and three assists in the win over Loyola Marymount. Heading into this season Houston had a career field goal percentage of .382 (132-346). Thanks to his strong start this year it now stands at .415 (182-439).
#21-MARK DAWSON •Season-high tying 8 points against Cornell •6-6 from field in last two games Dawson had a good weekend on the Central Coast, averaging 6.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. In the win over Cal Poly he had eight points and four rebounds, connecting on all four of his field goal attempts. Three of his rebounds were on the offensive glass. Dawson has hit his last six field goal attempts in a row and in the last six games is shooting .737 (14-19) from the field. In the win over Cornell he finished with eight points, two rebounds and a blocked shot. Dawson has scored eight points three times this season (Cal Poly, Cornell, Pepperdine). In the Pepperdine game he finished with career-high's in points (8) and rebounds (9). Of his nine boards, five were on the offensive glass. He also had an assist and a blocked shot. He leads the team with 13 blocked shots this year, including three against San Francisco State. Overall he is averaging 3.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He is shooting an impressive .676 (23-34) from the field.
#2-LOUIS DARBY •Season-high 10 points against Cal Poly •Averaging 8.0 points in last three games Louis Darby is starting to find his rhythm for the 49ers. In the last three games he is averaging 8.0 points per game. He had a season-high 10 points on Monday at Cal Poly, hitting five-of-seven shots from the field. At UCSB he tallied seven points, as he did against UC Davis. In the last three games he is shooting .667 (10-15) from the field. In the win over UMBC he had four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 13 minutes. Darby is currently averaging 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. In the first nine games of the year (before not playing vs. Cornell), Darby had a total of 24 points. In the last three games he has scored 24 points. In the win over San Francisco State he had five points and three rebounds.
#44-DOMINIQUE RICKS •Double-double at Sacramento State (18/10) •27 offensive rebounds Ricks recorded four points, three rebounds and one block in nine minutes against UC Davis and had two points and two boards at UCSB. In the win over Cornell he had four points, two rebounds and two blocks in just five minutes of action. His best performance of the season came at Sacramento State where he finished with career-high's for points (18), rebounds (10) and minutes played (23). Ricks was 6-7 from the field and 6-6 at the free throw line. For the year he is averaging 4.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting .605 (26-43) from the field and .733 (11-15) at the free throw line. He had a big game at Cal earlier this season finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Of his 53 total rebounds this year (second-most on the squad), 27 have come on the offensive glass.
#15-STERLING BYRD •Career-high 13 points vs. SFSU •14-30 from three-point range Byrd continues to lead the team in three-point field goal percentage standing at .467 (14-30). He did not play on Monday at Cal Poly and has hit just two-of-13 shots from long-range in his last eight games. In Monday's win over UC Davis he finished with six points and two rebounds. Byrd scored a season-high 13 points in the win over San Francisco State and followed that with 12 points in the win over LMU. He grabbed a season-high five rebounds in both games as well. Against LMU he was 4-4 from three-point range in the 93-85 triumph. Overall Byrd is averaging 4.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Overall this year Byrd is shooting .514 (19-37) from the field.
#0-ONYE IBEKWE •Season-high 12 points and 7 rebounds in win over Cornell •Shooting .556 (15-27) from the field this season Ibekwe had his best game of the season in the win over Cornell finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds. Four of his rebounds came on the offensive glass and he was 4-5 from the free throw line. Against UC Davis he finished with five rebounds in six minutes. In the win over LMU he finished with nine points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Ibekwe was 7-11 at the free throw line against LMU. In the win over UMBC he finished with seven points and three offensive rebounds. Against San Francisco State, Ibekwe finished with nine points and six rebounds. He is currently averaging 4.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and is shooting .556 (15-27) from the field thus far.
#11-ARTIS GANT •Career-high 10 points vs. SFSU •4-4 from 3-point range thus far Gant started against Cornell, finishing with two points and two assists in 12 minutes of action. He had his first double-digit scoring game as a collegian when he tallied 10 points against San Francisco State. Gant also added a career-best four assists in 19 minutes of action. Against LMU he did not score in 13 minutes, but finished with two assists and a steal while playing outstanding defense. In the opener at UNLV he had five points, one assist and one steal in 11 minutes. Gant is averaging 1.8 points and 0.9 assists per game is a perfect 4-4 from three-point range. He is the lone freshman scholarship player this year out of Pasadena High School.
#32-DOMINIC FREEMAN •Started three games this year (UNLV, Cal, Cornell) •5 points and 2 rebounds at UNLV Freeman, who had not played in the previous two games for the 49ers, started against Cornell. He played four minutes in the contest, garnering one offensive rebound. Freeman had three rebounds at Sacramento State in 11 minutes of action and is averaging 1.4 boards per game, along with 1.0 points per outing. His best game of the season was a three-point, three-rebound game vs. San Francisco State. In the UNLV game he had a strong opening game with five points, two rebounds and an assist in 10 minutes. At Cal he played just seven minutes, finishing with one rebound and one assist. Of his 11 total rebounds this season, six are offensive.
#35-ULRIC PATTILLO •3 points against UC Davis •Season-high 6 minutes of action vs. SFSU Pattillo has played in three games this season (UNLV, SFSU, UC Davis). Monday night he played two minutes against the Aggies and knocked down a three-pointer, his first of the season in three attempts. He played a season-high six minutes against San Francisco State finishing with two points, three rebounds and one assist. The three rebounds represents a career-high for him. Played two minutes at UNLV, taking one three-pointer and missing it. A walk-on, Pattillo played in 11 games in 2003-04, scoring six points and grabbing two rebounds, but sat out last year due to academic conflicts with his major (computer engineering).
#24-BRICE GALLOW •Saw first action of season vs. SFSU Has played in three games (SFSU, Sacramento State, UC Davis). Played two minutes on Monday against the Aggies, grabbing one rebound. Was on the court for four minutes vs. San Francisco State and played 30 seconds at Sacramento State. Is yet to score or take a shot this season. Gallow is a walk-on out of Redondo Union High School. Gallow went through the fall "try-out" session and the coaches liked what they saw and offered him a spot on the team.
