DeMaria Called up to Royals KANSAS CITY, MO-- The Royals saw something in former Dirtbag reliever Chris Demaria (2001-02) that the Pirates did not. After spending just 10 games in Double-A Wichita, Demaria is slated to become the third Dirtbag this season to make his Major League debut, following in the footsteps of Marlin starter Jason Vargas and Padre outfielder Paul McAnulty. He will be the 13th Dirtbag in the Majors this season, and 26th former player to reach the Big Leagues. Demaria, a former 17th round pick of the Pirates, spent three seasons in Single-A, going 15-7 with a 3.14 ERA, before being plucked off the Pittsburgh roster as a Rule 5 minor league draftee by the Royals. The Royals sent him to Single-A High Desert where he ranked fifth in the league in saves (19) and went 4-2 with a 2.26 ERA. He moved on to Wichita, where he went 0-1 with one save, striking out 19 and walking just two. Combined, he went 4-3 in 2005, with 20 saves and a 2.16 ERA. He struck out 89 and walked just 12. Demaria is the lowest 49er draftee to make it to the show, surplanting Gabe Gonzalez (16th) and Brent Cookson (15th), who each reached the Majors in the 1990's. The 2002 LBSU draft class also becomes the most successful, with Jeremy Reed, McAnulty and now Demaria all reaching The Show. 2005 MAJOR LEAGUERS |
