49ers Begin Season Ranked No. 24 LBSU Opens 2005 vs. Long Island on Aug. 26
August 8, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- The Long Beach State women's volleyball team will begin the 2005 season ranked No. 24, according to the AVCA/CSTV Top-25 pre-season coaches poll, released on Monday.
The 49ers finished the 2004 season with a 24-7 mark and an appearance in the NCAA playoffs. The 2005 squad features four seniors and five newcomers, including freshman Allison Daley, who led all of California with 814 kills her senior year at Nevada Union (Grass Valley). Also returning to is sophomore All-American, Alexis Crimes (Rancho Cucamonga). In 2004 Crimes averaged 3.88 kills and 1.25 blocks per game. Senior Heather Laudato (Buena Park), who set a school-record 537 digs last season, will anchor the back row, while junior Robin Miramontes (Upland), who recorded 348 kills in 2004, will provide a solid offensive threat at the opposite position.
Long Beach State opens its season on Friday, Aug. 26 vs. Long Island at The Walter Pyramid at 7:30 p.m. Conference play begins Friday, Sept. 30 at UC Santa Barbara. The 2005 schedule also features 11 non-conference opponents that advanced to the NCAA post-season last season. UC Santa Barbara was the only other Big West school ranked in the poll, checking in at No. 15. Nebraska garnered 35 first-place votes for the No. 1 ranking.
