Former Dirtbag Named Player of the Month NEW YORK, NY-- Former Long Beach State Dirtbag Jason Giambi (1990-92) was named the American League's Player of the Month after batting .355 with 24 RBIs and a Major League-best 14 home runs in July. It is the most homers by a Yankee since Mickey Mantle in 1961. Giambi, who had one homer in May and June, capped off the month with his 299th and 300th career homers against the Angels and watched his average rise 33 points over the month. He also had a .974 slugging percentage during the month. Giambi, a two-time first team All-Big West selection, batted .397 (third all-time) in three seasons with the Dirtbags, compiling 125 career RBIs (eighth) and a record 116 walks. He is one of 11 former players in the Majors this season. |
