LONG BEACH, CA -- The No. 24-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team outlasted the Sacramento State Hornets, 3-2, in the final day of the 2005 Mizuno Invitational at The Walter Pyramid Saturday night. Game scores were 19-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-24, 15-11.
The 49ers improved to 2-0, while Sacramento State fell to 1-2 on the season.
Freshman Quincy Verdin (Morgan City, LA) paced The Beach with 15 kills while Mariko Crum (14 kills), Alexis Crimes (13 kills and a career-high 13 blocks), and Ali Daley (12 kills) rounded out the top kill leaders for LBSU. In fact Crimes' 12 block assists tied for the second-most block assists in a single match in program history (Elisha Thomas, 12 vs. UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 21, 2000). Freshman Nicole Vargas (Seal Beach) registered her first double-double of the season with 56 assists and 12 digs to go along with five blocks. Daley (Grass Valley) also reached a double-double with a match-high 23 digs, while teammate Heather Laudato (Buena Park) turned in 22 digs and two aces. Atlee Hubbard led Sacramento State with 20 kills in the losing effort.
Long Beach State started sluggish in the first set, as the Hornets took advantage of six 49er attack errors for the 30-19 game one victory. Both Hubbard and Haupt put down six kills, en route to a .333 attack percentage for Sacramento State. Crum notched five kills for LBSU in the game. The Hornets unlocked a 6-6 tie with a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Sacramento State pushed its lead to 25-18 after a 49er attack error and capped off the game with two straight service aces.
The 49ers bounced back in the second stanza with a 30-24 victory behind four kills from Crimes and Rosie Lewis. Long Beach State also stepped up its defense, limiting Sacramento State to a .111 attack percentage (15-10-45). LBSU quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead after a CSUS attack error, and built a 19-11 lead after a Natalie Uhart kill. Sacramento State cut the 49er deficit to 25-20 after four straight LBSU attack errors, but Long Beach State recovered with kills from Daley and Crum to end the game.
The Hornets responded with a 30-25 game three victory for a 2-1 match lead. Sacramento State hit for a .375 attack percentage (14-2-32), while limiting The Beach to just a .186 clip. Long Beach State did hold a 14-9 lead after a Crum kill, before Sacramento State went on a 10-2 run to take a 19-16 lead. Two straight attack errors at the end of the game led to the victory for the Hornets.
Long Beach State forced a fifth game after a 30-24 game four victory. The 49ers cruised to an opening 10-3 lead after a Sacramento State ball handling error. The Hornets climbed back into the game and cut the deficit to 18-15 after a 49er attack error. Long Beach State pushed its lead to 28-21 after a Verdin kill and ended the game on a Daley kill.
The 49ers outlasted the Hornets, 15-11 in the final stanza to complete the victory.
LBSU travels to Columbus, OH for its next tournament, Sept. 2-3, vs. Michigan and Ohio State.
