49ers Open Season With a Sweep Crimes, Freshmen Lead LBSU to Victory

LONG BEACH, CA -- The No. 24-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team opened up its 2005 season with a 3-0 win over the Long Island Blackbirds in the Mizuno Invitational at The Walter Pyramid on Friday night. Game scores were 30-25, 30-13, 30-27. The 49ers have won 13 straight season openers since 1993.
Alexis Crimes (Rancho Cucamonga) paced The Beach (1-0) with a match-high 15 kills (.500 attack percentage) and a match-best eight blocks. Freshman Ali Daley (Grass Valley) recorded 13 kills, six digs, two blocks, and an ace in her collegiate debut, while fellow freshman teammate Nicole Vargas (Seal Beach) registered 24 assists, five digs, three kills, and a service ace in her Long Beach State debut. Heather Laudato (Buena Park) led The Beach with a match-best 14 digs, while Iris Murray (Artesia) chipped in with 10 digs. As a team Long Beach State recorded a .287 attack percentage and limited the Blackbirds (0-2) to just a .087 clip. Martina Wagner led LIU with 14 kills in the losing effort.
Daley notched five kills in the first frame to help Long Beach State capture a 30-25 game one victory. As a team, the 49ers recorded eight blocks, two courtesy of Mariko Crum and Crimes. The 49ers unlocked a 14-14 tie with a 3-0 run to take a 17-14 lead after an LIU attack error. LBSU increased its lead to 23-19 after a Daley kill, and finished the set on a Rosie Lewis kill. Long Island only mustered a .190 attack percentage in the frame.
The 49ers cruised to a 30-13 game two victory, thanks to a .324 attack percentage. Both Crimes and Lewis notched five kills in the game, while Vargas ran the offense with 11 assists. Long Beach State quickly jumped out to a 10-3 lead after a Lewis kill, and built a 20-7 advantage after another Lewis kill. Natalie Uhart ended the game with her third kill of the match.
LBSU rallied from a 21-14 deficit in the third set with a 30-27 game three victory to complete the sweep. Long Beach State completes the Mizuno Invitational vs. Sacramento State tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in The Walter Pyramid. Sacramento State defeated Long Island 3-1 earlier in the afternoon.
