Strong Summer for the Dirtbags

Another Strong Summer for the Dirtbags LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State baseball produced another crop of strong summers, with Evan Longoria (Downey) and Jared Hughes (Laguna Beach) leading the Cape Cod League, while Chuck Sindlinger (Reno) was named an All-Star in the Central Illinois League. Longoria finished the summer before his junior season leading the Cape in homers (6), RBIs (35), slugging (.500) and extra base hits (16), while ranking in the top-15 in batting with a .299 average. His 49 hits was third-best in the premier summer league. Longoria was a two-time Player of the Week as well. Longoria split time at second, short and third and was a starting all-star, along with Hughes, at second base. Longoria hit safely in 30 of 41 games, including 17 of his final 22. Hughes, a teammate of Longoria with Chatham, finished first in wins, going a perfect 7-0 during the regular season and not losing until the playoffs, and ranking seventh overall in ERA at 1.62. Hughes struck out 54 and walked just 11 in 50.0 innings. Hughes best outing came on June 26 when he took a perfect game into the ninth inning and finished with a two-hitter behind 12 strikeouts, earning Pitcher of the Week honors. Sindlinger also produced a strong summer, earning post-season All-Star honors after ranking eighth in the Central Illinois League in on-base percentage (.435), while batting .300 over 40 starts. His 34 runs was seventh-best. Three Dirtbags played for the Alaska Baseball League Champion Goldpanners who reached the NBC World Series. Brett Andrade (Pleasanton) produced a 2.15 ERA as the team's closer, racking up five saves and striking out 24 and walking just seven, while Matt Fitts (Cloverdale) went 4-2 with a 3.35 ERA over seven starts, striking out 44 and walking just 14 over 43.0 innings. Brandon Godfrey (Los Alamitos) batted .244 in 13 games. |
