Vargas Promoted to Marlins PHILADELPHIA, PA-- It did not take long for former Dirtbag Jason Vargas (Apple Valley) to make it to the Major Leagues. The 2004 second round pick of the Florida Marlins spent barely a full season in the minor leagues, making his Major League debut on July 14, striking out Mike Lieberthal on a high fastball in an inning of relief. He is slated to start Monday in Arizona for the Marlins. The lefthander was 5-2 with a 2.09 ERA in his first professional season in two levels of Single-A in 2004, before going 4-1 with a 0.80 ERA in five starts at single-A He is the 25th former 49er to play in the Majors, and the fourth former player to be called up this season, joining Paul McAnulty (Padres), Chad Bentz (Marlins) and Abe Alvarez (Red Sox). McAnulty made his debut last month, while Bentz and Alvarez each played last season. Triple-A All-Star Jeff Liefer, a six-year Major League veteran, is also on the cusp of returning to the Show with the Indians. Vargas, who teammed with first round picks Jered Weaver and Cesar Ramos as part of one of the top staffs in school-history last season, went 7-6 with a 4.14 ERA in 18 games in his final year of college. |
