Women Produce Best Finish in School-History IRVINE, CA-- The Long Beach State women matched its highest ever Big West Conference finish on Saturday, scoring a school-record 138 points and finishing in third place at the track and field championships hosted by UC Irvine. It was the team's highest finish since 1993, and only the fourth time in school-history (LBSU finished second and first in 1977 and 1978 in the sport's infancy) the 49ers had finished that high. The sprints program made up a majority of the scoring, grabbing 67 of the team's points, after scoring just 21 a year ago. LBSU got all-conference marks in all five of the sprints, with the 4x100-meter relay team winning with a time of 45.50 and the 4x400-meter relay team setting the school-record for the third time this season with a time of 3:41.88. Jessica Branker took second in the 200-meter dash with the fourth-fastest time in school-history at 24.14. Charlene Deardorff (11.79) finished in third place in the 100-meter dash, as did Jasmine Winfield (55.41) in the 400-meter run. The Beach also saw the return of 2004 Big West Athlete of the Year Ami Goldhammer, who has missed the entire season with a knee injury. Despite throwing the javelin for the first time on Thursday, and just three times before her knee flared up on Saturday, Goldhammer was able to finish in fifth place with a throw of 141'11" and qualify for the NCAA Regional. Charles Lewis picked up two all-conference certificates by winning the 400-meter (47.63) and finishing third in the 200-meter (21.66) on the men's side, who overall finished in sixth place. Ed Cornell was the only other man to earn All-Big West honors on Saturday by finishing third in the discus with a throw of 173'6". The men's team finished in sixth place with 87.50 points to winner CS Northridge (142.50 points). UC Santa Barbara won the women's championship with 179 points. All told, The Beach scored 14 All-Big West honors and will send a school-record 19 athletes to the NCAA Regional at the end of the month in Eugene, OR. Among those qualifying this weekdn for the regionals were Tyler McCoy (javelin), Lewis (400m), Kristina Price (shot put), Andrew Julius (discus), Hagen Hagos (triple jump) and Goldhammer.
