Dirtbags Look to Repeat on National Award DURHAM, NC-- Could the Dirtbags being making history? Long Beach State could, if ace lefthander Cesar Ramos (Pico Rivera) follows up National Player of the Year Jered Weaver and he, himself is named the Golden Spikes Award Winner for 2005. Ramos, who enters his start on Friday amongst the nation's leaders in wins (8) and ERA (1.71), is one of the intitial 40 on the Golden Spikes Award watch list. The lefthander continues to make a name for himself, having outdueled two of the other candidates earlier this season, including Wichita State righthander Mike Pelfrey, in what Baseball America tabbed as one of the nation's top games of the season. Ramos pitched a 1-0 four-hit shutout against Pelfrey and then followed that up with a two-hitter against No. 1-ranked CS Fullerton and their ace Ricky Romero. The threesome were all teammates on last summer's U.S. National Team. Overall, Ramos is 8-4 with a 1.71 ERA this season, having struck out 76 and walked just 12 on the season. Opponents are hitting .201 against him. Earlier this year Ramos was named to the watch lists for the Roger Clemens, Baseball America and Wallace National Player of the Year Awards. |
