Hughes Named Big West Pitcher of the Week IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State righthander Jared Hughes (Laguna Beach) was named the Big West's Pitcher of the Week after pitching a two-hit shutout at UC Irvine on Sunday. The sophomore struck out a career-best 10 and came one inning short of matching Dan Danielson's school-record one-hit performance back in 1979. Hughes, who has watched his ERA go from 4.34 to its current spot of 2.67 over the past three weeks, let just two balls get out of the infield in the series clinching game, a flyball in the second and a high chopping single in the ninth. The hit was erased by a double play, as Hughes induced 14 groundballs and faced just four over the minimum. Eight of sophomore's 10 strikeout victims came over the final five innings of work, including th side in the seventh. This is Hughes' first conference honor of his career. Hughes has been simply dominate over his last three starts, since defeating then-No. 1 CS Fullerton. The righthander has allowed just two runs over his last three starts and 25 innings to move to 4-2 on the season. The No. 14-ranked and first place Dirtbags (24-11, 5-1 Big West) will travel to Pepperdine on Tuesday for a contest at 3 p.m., before hosting CS Northridge this weekend.
